I was listening to XM Radio, and they played a number by "Count Five" called Psychotic Reaction. This was, as I learned later, a big 1966 hit in the U.S. Yes, sure, I've heard this song before, but I had forgotten about it and certainly could not recall the group's name.
I said to myself, "my goodness, I have never heard a band that tried to sound like the Yardbirds before."
It's amazing - instrumentally and vocally, they sound like them, even if the guitarist didn't have the chops of the various lead guitarists that the Yardbirds used. The style, though, was total Yardbirds copycat.
So, I did a Google search on the group, and I found this site:
http://www.nemsworld.com/count5/count5.htm
So, I have a question - did this song get airplay in the U.K. and if so, what was the reaction? |

Right. "Psychotic Reaction", from the prominent harmonica to the left-field tempo changes, was a reaction to The Yardbirds' US hit "I'm A Man", which made No. 17 nationally. Don't think "I'm A Man" was released in the UK, at least not as an A-side single, so I seriously doubt that "Psychotic Reaction" was released in the UK. |

I know this song from the Nuggets collection.
By the way, have any of you heard the current Yardbirds line-up? They are playing in Prague next week and I'm not sure if I want to go. |

Go! I saw The Yardbirds recently here in Hollywood. They were excellent, playing faithful recreations of all The Yardbirds' tunes you'd want to hear. |

Wow , sparty you got all that from one recording ?
I DO NOT TAKE CLOAKED POTSHOTS AT ARTISTS !
The Count V was a nice little west coast combo that released one
album in their career and were lucky enough to have a hit single.
Among their recordings is a note for note version(sans harmony)
of the Hollies recording of You Must Believe Me.
Another song of theirs ,Merry-Go-Round(another name for Carousel)
is an obviously Hollies inspired number that features Bobby Elliotts
EXACT drum breaks from Look Through Any Window. (the highways
and the by ways breaks)
In fact, they seem to have been influenced by ALL the hip
bands of the time in general (and the Hollies in particular).
The last thing I would call them is a YardBirds rip off.

I looked up the group in a record store's catalog, and the group DOES have a compilation CD with that one Hollies number on it. Unfortunately, it wasn't in stock.
I'll try to pick it up sometime.
But, Psychotic Reaction IS a Yardbirds ripoff, and I'll stand by that assertion no matter what anyone says. |

it's no more a rip off of the YardBirds ,
than the YardBirds were rip offs their own selves. |

Nice to learn they covered You must believe me. We really need a comprehensive list as possible of Hollies covers. I have quite a few. |

_________________ Would you believe the Hollies had power to stay by evolution of their style from Buddy Holly ? That's for certain because they follow what goes around, write on and go out on the road. They did it then, they do it now - please do it always.

Don't think so. I believe "I'm A Man" is a Bo Diddley tune. But "You Must Believe Me" is Curtis Mayfield. |
