Scott, I suggest you do as I did and ask Terry Sylvester yourself....
His email address is : charlotte_music@rogers.com
His website manager is Angela Davis, a very helpful lady...

Then if you still don't believe it, you can tell Terry he is wrong....

Before I do that, I'll have to take the side-by-side challenge again. But I'm ready to question anyone's 35 year old memories if my ears tell me to do so!

Who is Terry Sylvester again? Shocked Laughing

I thought Bobby had kept a journal of sorts to chronicle the band (and things such as this), was this not the basis of the book that he was alledgedly writing in the early '90's?

IMHO , The Out On The Road version of Out On The Road is
a far hipper arrangement than the version on HOLLIES with
the Chuck Berry-fied backing guitar lessening the songs
impact and making it bubble gummier.

I'm not saying , I'm just saying. Very Happy

I think there is no contest; the Rickfors versions are better.

I have now had a reply from Angela, Terry Sylvester's website Secretary...she tells me Terry has advised he "re-mixed" the original "Pick up the Pieces" backing track, and it seems the tempo was slightly amended...he can't recall if they re-cut the Bass (although it is possible), however Terry Sylvester says he did re-cut the Lead vocal for the second version (to my ears they sound virtually identical !), but that is what Terry says...he also added "it was a very long time ago"....

I also enquired re this with Bobby....but he could not remember and suggested we ask Terry...!

Look, since to my ears I still hear Rickfors on harmoney vocals and no sign of Allan, I find it likely that, whatever work the band may have done working on a new performance, in the end the record company just recycled the original. And why wouldn't they? At the time, no one figured that the Out On The Road album would ever be heard. So it makes good business sense for the Hollies in 1974 to release as a new song anything that had Terry or Tony as principle singer without obvious Rickfors vocals.

I still don't understand why EMI is so reluctant to officially issue out on the road on CD. In this day and age when bands issue outakes and rare catalog recordings, what is the "resistance" to letting the lp see the light of day in the 21st century?

I just hope and pray that with the recent Romany remaster, EMI turn their attention to OOTR. It could be doing with some TLC! Laughing

Yes, OOTR on a CD with good sound would be a great idea. I love that album and the Magic Records issue's sound is horrible. A remastering the way it was done with Romany would be great.

Yeah, I kinda thought Pick Up The Pieces was the same on both albums, although maybe it's just my ears, but the bass sounds a little different.

At around 1:52 into the song , the Ah's seem a bit more prominant than they do in the 1974 release, at least to my ears.
