Who plays (what sounds like a) recorder on this track? Wasn't really too fond of the song for a long while, but kinda warming to it! |

I'll guess Hans-Peter Arnesen, since I know he played recorder on stage with them at one point, as well as keys. If memory serves me well - and that's a big if - he played the recorder on "Star"as well. |

I know that Rod Argent gets credit as the outside musician on Star. |

No...on the studio version it's a real acoustic recorder and a real electronic synthesizer playing different parts. Arnesen and Argent respectively.
I don't know if Pete Wingfield has ever even held a recorder, but he played both parts on synth during the version of Star on "Live Hits".
Arnesen and Wingfield...or as a friend calls them, "the keyboard Petes". |

The Recorder on "Nearer to You" was played by Hans Peter Arnesen. |

Further to above, I asked my colleague Tony Marsden to check this info with Bobby when he interviewed him recently for "Carousel" fanzine....
and Bobby has duly corrected the earlier info we were given....
Bobby thinks it was actually Mike Rickfors himself who played the Recorder on "Nearer To You", cut over 21-26 February 1973.
So, hopefully, that is now clarified....
My thanks to Bobby Elliott. |

...and Mikael also played spoons, paper and comb, cleaned the studio and made the tea! Blimey, what Rickfors allegedly lacked in front-man material, he certainly made up for with his instrumental contributions. Thanks for the information, Geoff.

Thanks, Geoff for this info, and thanks to Mr. Elliott and Mr. Marsden as well. Mikael is certainly a talented singer/songwriter/musician. |

I have never seen a musician do as much on stage as Rickfors did with The Hollies:
Lead and harmony vocals, bass, lead guitar, congas, keyboards, and harmonica. |

Next thing you know, we'll learn Mikael did the tuba part on "Water on the Brain", the violin solo on "Stop Right There", the saxes on "Look What We've Got"... |

Kidding aside, Mikael Rickfors was/is an amazing talent. I will pick up his new CD. |

I read a bit of Rickfors' website, and a couple of things are unclear to me:
1. Which of his releases are still in print and so available from a place like Amazon.uk or other Internet retailer?
2. Which releases are strictly in English?
Thanks in advance for anyone who knows the answers. |

All solo albums by Rickfors that were originally on vinyl have subsequently been reissued on CD, so you should look out for those. If you see few of them on Ebay US, remember there is a European version of Ebay, based in Ireland, Ebay.ie. I would also try Amazon.de (German) if you do not find much on Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk. |
