Well, nice to see it played live. I haven't seen it live with Allan before (just live in concert when The Hollies were still with Carl).
Great drum work by Bobby and great vocal work by Allan. But I must say that the quality is not too good and that the end is missing. And it sounds to my ears, as if Tony's solo never sounded as perfect and "flowing" as on the studio recording. Some notes sound out of key in his solo, as during the 1976 New Zealand concert. It sounded more perfect during the live concert I visited in 2004. That might be the result of Tony becoming a better guitar player, although I think that he always was great. An acoustic guitar solo is not easy to play and Tony always wanted to play quick parts in his solos. Mistakes can happen here and there and it's ok, I think.
Oh, yes, and the harmony vocals are not loud enough compared to Allan's vocals. But it's a good version all in all. |

just a `theory'(because I don't really know)
On the album Confessions Of A Mind(likewise the Epic-ized Moving Finger),
the main backing guitar is done with a steel string acoustic with a capo at
the 2nd fret like you see in the video. And Tony very well could have played
all the guitar parts for all we know & as many times as necessary till the sound
and feel was just so.
However , when it comes to the solo , a nylon string classical guitar was used.
He also could have recorded it more than once in the studio to obtain that
perfect flow we know and love so well on the record/disc.
Again , it's just a theory , speculation and so forth.
(feel free to rip me a new one if I'm wrong )
I'm not saying, I'm just saying
oh and thanks to all for posting links. |
