I have satellite T.V. called Foxtel and sometimes they show an episode of the Ed Sullivan Show and I have seen The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and even Herman's Hermits on it. I was just wondering if anyone knows if The Hollies ever appeared on Ed Sullivan Question

Strange one the Hollies not being on Ed's show, pity as he did a lot for the English groups like HH, Freddie and the Dreamers and the Beatles etc. The Hollies were on Hullabaloo a few times. I used to have pay TV Susie and the shows about Ed were great, I got a lot of great music clips from them. Watch out to see if they bring back the Mike Walsh show, the Hollies played Heavy and Stop in the name of Love on it from 1983.

Thankyou for replying to my message Holliesfan and guest. When I was watching The Ed Sullivan Show yesterday, I thought to myself "wonder if The Hollies ever appeared on it". It's a shame that they never because practically every other popular band/singer did. Confused

You know, I find it really STUPID that Freddy & The Dreamers made it to the Ed Sullivan show but not the Hollies... after all, the Hollies were always a class act unlike Freddy and his gang

I wonder if Mssrs. Clarke, Hicks, Nash, or Elliott have any recollections as to why the band never got to perform on the Sullivan show. Perhaps Rob can uncover that answer for the forum.

Hi Shells,
I think you are a little hard on Freddie and the Dreamers, they were a group who loved to have fun on stage and I feel we were all better for it.
Now everybody lets do the FREDDIE.
Oh, by the way guest was me, forgot to log in.

I wasn't being hard on Freddie, just pointing out that, musically the Hollies are far superior... I loved singing along to Freddie's songs but nothing he did could compare to the talent of the Hollies... It just beats me how talent like that was missed by Ed Sullivan the very man who gave people a chance on US TV That's all

Hi Shells,
I think the Hollies have to take some of the blame, don't feel they really ever did a good job at promoting themselves, maybe wrong but just look at all the things they could have done for their 40th year. I know groups like HH, freddie the Beatles did very well from Ed's show. I remember years ago I heard or read an interview with Allan and he was asked about video clips, and he said people know what we look like and felt no need for them. Not a great way to win new fans.

Hi Anthony

I think you are right about the Hollies not "cashing" in on what could be a fantastic year for them, but from previous posts you will see that a lot of things that the Hollies DON'T do could fall under this vein as well.

I know there are some on the forum that think I moan a lot about that certain "aloofness" that the lads seem to have, but if you look at it there are soo many missed opportunities that they might have used to be even bigger than they are now...

Maybe now you'll understand where I am coming from... I met Freddie at Prestatyn in Wales in the 1980's where he was appearing in a club there... he was approachable and friendly.... C wot I mean?

Hi Shells Exclamation

I understand what you mean. I don't really know much about Freddie and The Dreamers (but I have heard of them) so I can't give an opinion on them. Anyway Shells, you are right when you said The Hollies are a class act. Smile

And Holliesfan that's a good idea you had about seeing if Tony's, Bobbys, Allan's or Graham's wives can recollect why the boys never got to appear on Ed Sullivan. Or maybe Rob can shed some light on it. Cool

Hi Shells Exclamation

Thankyou for your nice comment but I can't take all the credit for the idea I had because Holliesfan had the same idea, but thankyou anyway. Smile

Could it have been simply that the timing of the hollies visits to the USA didn't permit an appearance on the show Question I do believe that when they went to America they were quite heavily committed. Particularly on their first visit.
