Do they still have those? Oh, the good old days, back in the '70s, when you could go to a drugstore and pick up a sealed Kinks album for 97 cents. Smile

Over here they have cheap music stores like Music Zone who sell some CD's at £4.99 and the like. I have seen shelves where they try to offload old stock in other music shops. Occasionally a bargain can be obtained!

In the States, we had "cut outs," where the record store would snip off the upper right corner of the LP cover, which was then sent back to the record company signifying that the record wasn't sold at full price. The "cut out" was then sold at a drastically reduced price, but of course it couldn't be returned or exchanged if defective.

Yes. I bought a sealed copy of Jonathan King's "Or Then Again" LP, with "Everyone's Gone To The Moon", in a drugstore in Palm Springs, CA. Took the record out of the sleeve, and it was warped, but it still played when I taped a coin onto the tonearm.

I think this collection looks good to fans with only a couple of albums, I would imagine most of the fans here would have almost everything you can get your hands on. I do like the fact it has a song by the latest line up and it's a great number to finish the collection.
To be honest is there really much material that has not been released?

Not released on legit CD? Sure, tons of it.

And that doesn't even cover studio outtakes, BBC recordings, or concerts.

Yes. Record Collector Magazine had an article listing the unreleased tracks. There could at least be a Rarities Volume 2.
Concert material is another matter. Most bands with such longevity have had at least one whole concert released legitimately from the 'golden age' ('64 - '74), but not The Hollies.

Original release date for "Finest" was supposed to March 26, according to Amazon. However, it has been moved back to April 12, and Amazon has notified me my copy will not ship until several days after that...

Hi Sparty,
I just noticed your bit on "cut outs" I have seen American records here with the corners cut off , never knew what that was for. I know the covers were a lot thicker than the Albums we had here in Australia.

Just got my copy of The Hollies Finest, and I have to admit that it is, as the back cover describes it, "An alternative 'Best of'...and a welcome one.

Some of the obvious hits are missing, like Stay, Stop Stop Stop, I Can't Let Go, Jennifer Eccles, and even He Ain't Heavy. But in their place, you get album tracks such as Fortune Teller, Clown, Heading for a Fall, Postcard, Lady Please, etc.

Bobby Elliott's liner notes don't add much to the story, with a few exceptions...he says that the Hollies were "one-take specialists" in the studio, because of a certain person's eagerness to get to the Abbey Tavern before closing time (implying that person was Ron Richards). The most interesting bit is this:

Privately, Tony recounts the story of him going to a Simon and Garfunkel recording session, along with Allan and Graham, whilst we were in New York City in the mid 60s. "The Hollies had recently recorded Paul's song, 'I Am a Rock', and the three of us sang an acappella version of it to Arty and Paul, who both excitedly said, 'That's it, that's the sound...how did you do that!' I think they liked the third harmony".

My guess would be that one of the band members was the one eager to hit the pub.

That "Stop Stop Stop" video shows the lads have a very good time in a bar. I'm guessing the fellas were no strangers to the neighborhood pub!

I've seen the album in HMV for £8. Not a bad price, but sorry, no way - got it all already!

That was my guess, too, Sparty! I assumed he meant one of the band members...but Bobby continues on: "With hindsight, in those formative days, we should have been encouraged to take more care over our recorded performance. What if George Martin had produced the Hollies?" Laughing
