I encourage those of you into the Merseybeat sound (and audiophiles/completists) to get The Escorts Live At The Blue Angel CD from Terry's website. I was privileged to listen to my copy with Terry in the car, and he is very proud of what he & his mates accomplished (given the obstacles, too!) at the ripe old ages of 16 & 17. I really feel they were a band before their time, given their talent at such a young age. Their musicianship and harmonies was amazing. After hearing this CD, it makes total sense why The Hollies picked Terry to carry Graham's high harmony torch.
You'll hear the heavy Everley Brothers influences on some cuts, including their absolutely gorgeous cover of 'Let It Be Me'...the way they ended the song (musically speaking - modulating to a half step higher key, and then the minor 3rd al fine - is genius, and sends shivers down my spine.) 'From Head To Toe", although minus Terry as he had just left for the SBJ's, is a hidden pop gem, that at least was recognized by Elvis Costello in the 70's!
This CD gives you a true inside track as to what one of the popular bands in Liverpool sounded like. After all, they were invited by Brian Epstein via Ringo, to open The Beatles last Cavern show in '62! |

Yes Terry's old band were brilliant, full of youthful "fire"...but with an interesting more subtle attention to detail on their vocal harmonies than you would expect for such young lads of around 17,they also cut a fine cover version of "I Don't want to go on without you" but were unlucky that the much better known Moody Blues. |

Geoff and Hofner, thenak for the revies. I definitely get my hands on those two CDs when I have the chance.
It's amazing how many great British bands there were in Liverpool and Manchester during the Beat Boom, and sad that not all of them became as famous as the Beatles or the Hollies. Then again, not everyone can have the same levels of fame. |
