I'm curious....What would you expect the Hollies pay for studio time when they record a new album? Does EMI absorb some of these costs or is it solely the band's responsibility?

Well if they record at Ray Stile's studio they mustn't pay that much I think Smile

At a studio like Abbey Road I don't know but I think when they've got a record deal the company pays for the studio time.

The record company pays for the studio time? Yes, I'm sure.

However, if the artist in the studio is on their label, I'll guess that the record company gets it on the back end, "billing" the time as a production cost that they recoup out of the money remitted to the artist out of the record sale fees.

And if the artist doesn't have a recording contract with the studio, then they're probably paying an hourly fee out of their pocket to the studio for the recording time.

And I won't get into the issue of variable costs (personnel payroll, materials, supplies, etc.) vs. fixed costs that are allocated in any way the studio deems fit (rent, wear and tear on the recording equipment). That allocation of the fixed costs is where the big money probably comes into play.

(can you tell I'm an accountant?)
