My favourite Hollies-songs are:
1. Long Cool Woman (I just love Allan singing Rock'n'Roll)
2. I Can't Tell The Bottom From The Top (In my opinion it's their best ballad, I like it even more than He Ain't Heavy)
3. On A Carousel (That was my first favourite song and it's a perfect Pop-Rocker)
4. Gasoline Alley Bred (Great melody, great singing, great guitar playing)
5. Crocodile Woman (In my opinion the Hollies are at their best when they rock out and on this song they really do!)
My favourite Albums are:
1. Distant Light (You could guess that from my nickname... that album has a great sound, I think it's a big improvement in sound and songwriting over Confessions Of The Mind. Everybody is in top form on this record and the songs are great.)
2. Romany (It has the same kind of sound that Distant Light has and the songs on here are all great, too. And I really like Mikael Rickfors voice.)
3. Russian Roulette (That Album has a lot of rocking tracks on it and I love everyone of them. And I love Wiggle That Wotsit - I don't know why so much people dislike it - it's just good fun.)
4. Write On (It's a really fresh Album and it has a very different sound than Another Night which makes it more lively)
5. Evolution (Out of the sixties LP's with Graham Nash this is perhaps my favourite. There are some failed experiments on it like the horrible Lullaby To Tim but other experiments do really work like the loud distorted guitars on Have You Ever Loved Somebody or Then The Heartaches begin. The following Butterfly comes close but it lacks the rocking energy that this one has.)[/b] |

1. Carrie Anne
2. Long Dark Road
3. On a Carousel
4. Dear Eloise
5. Bus Stop
HM -The Air That I Breathe
Long Dark Road is a song that doesn't seem to get the attention it deserves. They really nailed this one... particularly on the vocals. |

Number one favourite song is Too Young To Be Married. Lyrics, Tony's guitar playing and vocals are about as good as you get from the Hollies. The others, not necessarily in order of preference include Stop, Stop, Stop, I'm Down, Feet On The Ground, The Day That Curly Billy Shot Down Crazy Sam Magee. It is very hard to limit it to just five. There are so many very good tunes that I love listening to.
Albums include For Certain Because, Confessions of the Mind, Write On, Hollies (1974) and Crazy Steal. The last one is my sentimental favourite as it is the last one that the lineup I grew up with wrote (well most of the songs)
Most albums also include what I call "The Stupid Song" It is one with banal or bad or just plain stupid lyrics, or the sound , the feel of the song is wrong, or I just don't like it for unspecified reasons. These include songs like Wiggle That Wotsit, Burn Out, Sweet Country Calling and Isn't It Nice. I also get annoyed by any arrangement that includes the piccolo. |

My 5 favourite Hollies songs:
1. Bus Stop - the song that made me a fan
2. He Ain't Heavy - most beautiful Hollies ballad and Allan's voice on it is absolutely perfect
3. The Baby - great song with a great Mikael Rickfors on vocals
4. Mad Professor Blythe - just love it
5. Confessions Of The Mind - Tony's masterpiece
My 5 favourite Hollies albums:
1. Out On The Road - love EVERY song on it; in my opinion the album with the greatest variety of music styles (rock, folk, country, reggae, pop); quite ironic that my favourite album still is waiting for an official EMI release on CD in top sound quality
2. Hollies 1974 - again great songs; my favourite album rockers are on it ("Down On The Run", "Sam McGee", "Rubber Lucy")
3. Butterfly - I love the good mood and nature spirit of that album; great tunes and I love the psychedelic feeling that flows through this album; their most creative work
4. 5317704 - very underrated album with some of their finest album love songs; "When I'm Yours" and "It's In Everyone Of us" are two of their finest songs
5. Hollies - their third album and the best one of theirs during the pre-psychedelic and beat era; great songs and they experimented with noises on it (the end of "Too Many People"); could it be that The Hollies used noises before The Beatles did ?; the sound of bursting glass really fits at the end of the song |

My favourite Hollies singles are in no particular order :-
1. I Can't Tell The Bottom From The Top - The song that made me a Hollies fan.
2. Curly Billy - My favourite Hollies rocker
3. I Can't Let Go - My favourite 60s Hollies single
4. On A Carousel - My second favourite 60s Hollies single
5. Gasoline Alley Bred - Classic.
My favourite Hollies albums are in the order they are in (I don't have Out On The Road currently) :-
1. For Certain Because - Has a sentimental value for me as it was the only album that cheered up my whole family when my nan passed away.
2. Evolution - Got to love the fuzz guitar on Then the Heartaches Begin and Have You Ever Loved Somebody and has one of my all time favourite tracks You Need Love.
3. Would You Believe - There are some really standout tracks on here including their versions of Take Your Time, I Am A Rock, Don't You Even Care and not forgetting I Can't Let Go.
4. Hollies 74 - My favourite 70s Hollies album including the best lyrics Allan ever wrote (Don't Let Me Down).
5. Butterfly - Love the majority of the tracks (not too fond of Makerand Wishyouawish ),Would You Believe, Step Inside and Dear Eloise are the standout tracks for me. |

I wonder what the LEAST favourite songs are. You know - you're playing the CD and you get to a ceratin song and you always skip it to move onto the vast majority that you love.
This may sound weird to some but these days I usually skip "Carrie Anne" and "Dear Eloouise". Oh well that's me. |

Interesting because to me Carrie Ann (CA) was one of my favourites - and the song most associated with the Hollies (apart from He Ain't Heavy) over the years - but like you, I tend to skip it now when on CD.
However, I do really enjoy seeing the BBC Golgers Green concert version of CA which you can catch on Youtube. I think it is more enjoyable, partly because of Bobby's drumming, and also being less produced; looking at the original record, maybe it sounds too sweet now. |
