Hi All,

wondering if you could help. I was at a cd fair last weekend, when i heard a very familiar sound coming from one of the stalls.
When i got closer i realised it was a live hollies show that was playing, the cd was called "Think Purple" 1990 Tour anthology, i cant tell you the track listing as the cd was snapped up by a man at the stall, but the quality was amazing.

Just wondering if anyone could shed any light on this for me.

Best Wishes

bob

I believe you could buy it at concerts in the 90's.
Funny I saw a video clip of Prince singing it only the other day,
The Hollies do it better.

It is a bootleg, supposedly recorded live during the 1990 tour of the UK but I beleive it was actually recorded in Germany, the only place that the band sang Whiter Shade of Pale acapella/acoustic to band.

Originally it was on tape cassette only but now can be found on CD. I have found it at several CD fairs over the years.

Hi all,

thanx for the information, i know there are many differing opinions on bootlegs...
although this was an exceptiionally good recording, shame it was never officially released.
i'm of the opinion that if it takes money away rom the lads then im against it.
i've asked the stall holder to get me some more info on the disc ( i was unaware at the time it was a bootleg, packaging and quality was way above what i expect from a boot ) so i may find out more later.

Thanx again

Rob

Hi Bob
Ive never heard of it mate. I know a lot of bands dont mind this kind of thing as long as no money exchanges hands. I know that bands such as Marillion and a few others I just can think of at the moment, aprove of a thing called Free Trade.

However, they make it clear that no one should ever charge anything for these recordings. Also on the CD/DVD it says to continue suporting the artiste by buying the music. So someone at work told me anyway who collects CDs like Marillion etc!

Because of the open policy which some of these bands have there is some great recordings about too.

Also on the other hand, I think recordings could be took from the mixing desk quite easily and I think The Hollies could sell them quite easily at the shows. But I dont know what the copyright thing would be like as regards that.

It would be a nice little memento of the Tours in my opinion, obviously anything would be with The Hollies approval. It would be intresting to hear what kind of an opinion they have on this.

I can't remember who it was, but some famous rock band produced live CD's from the sound desk of every show they played on tour, all at a reasonable price. The CD's were available soon after the show from some location.

Personally, I do not see the harm in live bootlegs as long as the artist is not losing money from non-sale of legitimately-released product. I have a very rare bootleg of an unreleased album and when the band eventually release this, remeastered, which may be later next year, I will buy it.

I consider that the Hollies have really shot themselves in the foot over the years concerning the release of live material - all we have is the excellent Live Hits and the pretty good Nash reunion live CD. Where's Lewisham? Singapore? 80's/90's performances? River Records had a Hollies gig from the Magnum in Irvine in 1987 in their archive, but it would need to be licensed before official release.

James,
Couldn't agree with you more; it is pathetic that there is no significant live material from their golden years, which I consider to be 1964-74. A few paltry live tracks from the mid-'60s on the box set; big deal. Where is the full concert we fans crave? Is it so much to ask for something from when the band was actually on the charts? The '76 live album is post-hits, and Live '83 with Nash doesn't satisfy either.
