James,
Interesting comment about the band having to work harder with Rickfors aboard. It shows in the live performances. The band had more of an "edge" to their sound. Even "Bus Stop", which is very smooth in the studio version, has a rocking feel to it that is very exciting and makes it fresh. I think that is the key word: fresh. Having Rickfors in the band was like a breath of fresh air. There was a sense of excitement and drama that is missing from the live shows I've heard with Clarke. But in some TV video clips I've seen, in particular a live one from '71 where they are performing "Gasoline Alley Bred", there is no denying the beauty of the Clarke/Sylvester/Hicks vocal blend. It is thrilling. So both lineups are great. It really can't be said that one is better than the other. |

Dennis, that is a good comment from you - 'edge'. This is definitely true of many of the Rickfors-era tunes. I think this was a little bit of a breath of fresh air at the time, much although Clarkey was one in a million, bless his cotton socks |
