Here's a neat tidbit. For those of you who prefer to start reading at the end of the story, you'll find the last paragraph to be particularly interesting.

Lads Club looks to next generation

LANDMARK: Salford Lads Club

Opened by "a hero of boys everywhere" and made internationally famous by a very different kind of hero, Salford Lads Club celebrates its centenary this month. The red-brick building in the city's real Coronation Street will host a "From Baden-Powell to Morrissey" weekend to mark its history.

The Edwardian gem won listed building status last year and is a mecca for
fans of 80s band The Smiths, who used it for the sleeve of their album The
Queen is Dead.

Such is the global fame of The Smiths' lead singer, Morrissey, that he has
inspired international interest in the club and in the last year there were
66,000 hits on its website. Fans still regularly travel to pose for pictures
under the famous club sign.

In December, a couple travelled from Guatemala to see the archway entrance used by The Smiths and this week, the American rock group Brand New posed there for a photo-shoot. But the building, which retains many of its original fittings, is far more than a backdrop.

It was officially opened on January 30, 1904, by Sir Robert Baden-Powell,
founder of the Scout movement and is still keeping kids off the streets.
Among former members are actor Albert Finney and Alan Clarke, lead singer of 60s hit Manchester group The Hollies.
