Without question- King Midas in Reverse by THE POSIES recorded in 1990. I think they were one of the first US groups to record an orig Hollies Tune before the inclusion of the track on the Hollies Sing In Reverse some 5 years later!
Next would be Look Thru any Window by THE LOUD FAMILY. (The band that power pop wizard SCOTT MILLER put together after the indefatiguable dissolution of his first go-round GAME THEORY,
# 3 goes to STEVE WYNN formely of DREAM SYNDICATE for his very 'breathy reading'.
#4-5 Kudos and much accolades to former LET'S ACTIVE Mogul MITCH EASTER for his musically pleasant, 'Pay You Back with Interest' and (5) goes to The Flamingos' pop bliss-a-thon, 'Water on the Brain' |

I have always liked the Everly Brothers' performance of "I've Been Wrong." |

Not sure it counts as a cover as I think The Hollies' version was actually released later, but I have always preferred the Searchers' version of Have You Ever Loved Somebody. Somehow The Hollies' version seems a little on the sloppy side by comparison. I'm not sure off the top of my head but perhaps this was one of the tracks that Bob didn't play on? |

Yeah, was this not one on which Clem Cattini played on? Schoolgirl - was that not another? |

I quite like The Searchers version of Have You Ever Loved Somebody, the Australian 60's band - The Twilights' - version of What's Wrong With The Way I Live and Australian 60's band - The Cherokees' - version of Little Lover.
I haven't taken into account whether the Hollies wrote the songs or not. Just what they have recorded. |

Hi Kathy
Allan Clarke, Graham Nash and Tony Hicks wrote 'What's Wrong With The Way I Live' (well that what it says on my copies). I have both The Twilights and The Hollies versions of the song and I can't believe I'm saying this but I like The Twilights version is the best one.
Back in about 1970 Australian Singer Ronnie Burns came out with his own version of 'I Can't Let Go', it was a good song but The Hollies version was better.
Another Singer Linda Ronstadt sang 'I Can't Let Go' in the mid 70's and that wasn't as good as the The Hollies version either.
Best Wishes

I think on Schoolgirl played Mitch Mitchell of the Jimi Hendrix Experience. |

Dan Fogelberg & Tim Weisberg recorded a version of "Tell Me To My Face."
I learned that around 1983 when I heard it coming from a dormitory room down the hall while I was in college.
http://www.treehouse.org/fogelberg/Discography/TwinS.htm
From that website, I see that it was released in 1978. |

I agree. The Posies' version of "King Midas in Reverse" is GREAT. I actually think it is better than The Hollies' original. It ROCKS. I'm going to see The Posies in concert in September and you better believe I will give a shout out for "King Midas".
Of other cover versions, Keith ("98.6") had a mid-charter in 1967 with an exotic arrangement of "Tell Me to my Face". |

The only Hollies song I can think of which I prefer by someone else is The Everly Brothers' version of 'Like Every Time Before'. The way The Hollies' 1968 version starts with the middle eight (rather than a guitar intro & a verse) makes it sound incomplete to me.
I wonder if the unreleased earlier cut (from March '66) had the same arrangement as The Everlys' version?

I don't know if it is a true Hollies cover since they didn't actually write the song, but Harry Nilsson did a nice version of "Just One Look" back in the late '70s. |

This one is for L.A. Dennis...good taste good taste and SOMEONE who knows who Ken and Jon are from the Posies! We (my wife and I) saw THE POSIES here last September at the Exit Inn(Nashville) with a paltry 75 or so showed up and guess which number I called out and they complied with a few bars and a chorus....the Best of Bellingham...
Thats who should do some gigs in England w/The Hollie...maybe under the Big Star name (w/Alex Chilton and Jody Stephens)
They (BS) got some gigs coming up later this month in England I believe...hmmmm
remote paths may cross??!!! |

Hi Peter!
It gives any real great Hollies song versions - covers by other groups which were much better than the Hollies original version:
River - A litle thing like love - Out of this world
Glasmoon - On a Carousel
Wilson Brothers - Another Night

Have you ever loved somebody by the Searchers.
They still do it live, I requested it before a show in autumn 2005, and they played it for me - a great band! |
