It would be interesting to know what other bands or types of music Hollies fans have listened to over the years. Since the early 1970's, to name but a few, I have listened to:
Bread
David Gates
Gilbert O'Sullivan
Led Zeppelin
Elton John
Steely Dan
CSNY
Bad Company
Santana
Joni Mitchell
Dianna Krall
Various folk groups
Cuban jazz
Josh Groban
The list is not in order of preference......please be gentle with me....!

Good question,
Queen: have many of their cd's and Video's/ DVD's Freddie had a brilliant voice.
Cliff Richard: yes it's true I do like most of his stuff.
Bee Gees: not the Disco times
AC/DC
Some groups I like but don't have their cd's are Aerosmith, John Cougar Mellencamp, Alice Cooper.
With 60's groups:
Is there any better than the Beatles. I also like Herman Hermits, Master Apprentices, Monkees, Gerry and the Pacemakers, the Who plus many others,
Bye all,
Anthony |

I like the British Beat era 1963-1966. But generally if it's 1960's - I'm there. |

You should look in the "favorite groups of the '60s and '70s" forum. There a lot of people have listed their non-Hollies favorites!
Mine are:
Beatles
Smokie
Sweet
Kinks
Badfinger
Cat Stevens
Rod Stewart
Queen... and a thousand others |

Anthony: Its interesting you have AD/DC on your list. Angus and Malcolm use stock guitars, meaning that nothing has been modified except for the 'pickups' on the axes. Oh yeah Cliff Williams one of the original members was also a member of the group 'HOME' which included WISHBONE ASH guitarist LAURIE WISEFIELD. Home recorded 3 albums before Laurie joined Wishbone(1974-1984)
Though my fav ravs from 'down under' is THE CHURCH(though Stve Kilbey the bassist and Marty Willson-Piper are both originally from England). Their last studio album 'FORGET YOURSELF' was once again w/0 exception, exceptional!
Midnight Oil-Im still surprised the guys just like THE CHURCH still come over and tour the states. 'Capriocornia' their last one was a good one, byh the way.
Icehouse-IVA DAVIES is great. Seen them live one time when living in the Phila Pa area (the states). They were touring for their last US release lp, 'Man of Colour' WHAT A SHOW! Robert Kreschmer soared on guitar esp during 'Walls' (not the Allan Clarke Song) |

Great subject Mate, well my choices are a right mixed bag:
50s
Elvis Presley,Buddy Holly,Everley Brothers,Eddie Cochran, Bobby Vee and Del Shannon.
60s
The Tremeloes, The Beatles, The Hollies,The Searchers(nowadays Mike Pender’s Searchers),The Move, The Rolling Stones, The Who,Smal Faces, Cliff Richard (just his early stuff),Gerry And The Pacemakers, Swinging Blue Jeans, and last but my no means least The Shadows.
To Name but a few!
70s
Mud, Glitterband, The Bay City Rollers,Showaddywaddy, The Sweet, The Rubbetes,Thin Lizzy, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Elvis Costello and Queen.
There again but to name a few.
80s
Marillion, Talking Heads,Duran Duran, Ultravox, Go West, Shakin Stevens(no really if you see him live he is great!), Simple Minds, Inxs, The Pretenders, Meatloaf, Robert Palmer, Bryan Adams, T'Pau and dare I say it Bucks Fizz (With Shelly Preston, Phoar!,well I was only 18 at the time)
90s Oasis(Early stuff mainly) Travis, Lightining Seeds, Bur, Supergrass, The Corrs. Yet again but to name just a few!
00s
Marillion (Steve Hogarth Line Up),(I know I have put them for the 80s but this line-up is superb. If you like Radiohead and Pink Floyd, give Marillion a listen, you will be blown away. I was)
Maroon 5, Keane, The Darkness, Katie Melua, Jamie Cullam.
Well I did say it was a right mixed bag!

Can I recommend a group that a Hollies fan would LOVE from the 60's ?
If you can locate a recording anywhere but here, :-
Try an Aussie band called "The Easybeats"
Their Tracks:-
Friday on my mind (voted BEST Australian song ever)
She's so fine
I'll make you happy
Women
Wedding Ring
Sorry
Unfortunately they did record some ordinary songs, but these are classics ! |

Current music, & coming from a 60's freak, these must be good:-
Maroon 5
Green Day
Blink 182
& a new Aussie band, Thirsty Merc (horrid name, but they really are great )
& like any self respecting 60's lover,
I HATE thump thump, hip hop, rap crap witha VENGEANCE !!!! |

Two other groups that were founded in the 60s had much in common with The Hollies. The Beach Boys and The Association also reproduced their beautiful harmonies live and played their own instruments on stage. The 70s/80s band Utopia that included Todd Rundgren also did unbelievable harmonies on stage while displaying their instrumental skills.

Like everybody, I listen to a wide range of music usually depending on what mood I'm in, or I go through phases where I spend a week or two listening solidly to an artiste who I then won't listen to again for quite some time.
From the 1950s - Buddy Holly - Julie London - Everly Brothers - Gene Vincent - Johnny Kidd and The Pirates - Peggy Lee - Duke Ellington - Alma Cogan - Jerry Lee Lewis and many more
From the 60s - The Beatles - The Kinks - The Who - Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention - Pink Floyd with Syd Barrett - Dave Clark Five - Yardbirds - Pretty Things - PJ Proby - Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band - Pentangle - Beach Boys - The Zombies and many many more
From the 70s - Hawkwind - King Crimson - Deep Purple - Led Zeppelin - Black Sabbath - Roxy Music - David Bowie - The Damned - Genesis -Kraftwerk - Elkie Brooks - Elton John - The Sweet - Kevin Ayers - Iggy Pop and more
From the 80s - Madness - The Jam - Adam and The Ants - Eurythmics - Gary Numan - Siouxsie and The Banshees - Propaganda - Lisa Stansfield - Soft Cell and others
From the 90s - PJ Harvey - Pulp - Portishead - Jeff Buckley - Dubstar - Suzanne Vega - Kirsty MacColl - Sheryl Crow and not much else
From the Noughties - Moloko - Bjork - KT Tunstall - White Stripes - Eliza Carthy - Sparks - Tori Amos - Brian Wilson...
I also love Jazz especially Miles Davis and "eccentric" artistes like Ivor Cutler and Vivian Stanshall. Quite a variety and these lists are only really a tip of the iceberg! |
