One more song was recorded on 14 January 1984 at Rudy Records, this was "Don't Close Your Eyes",which, apparently, does have Clarke/Hicks/Nash vocals...so it must need "finishing off" instrumentally [like "Schoolgirl" and "Samuel" did],Tony Hicks once said..."we really must go back and finish that one day..." I quite agree!.

Speaking of the track "Samuel", does anyone know the history surrounding this recording? I'm curious to know what lineup was used and what studio it was recorded at. It is an absolutely great song with a super melody and outstanding harmonies. Other than the "The Hollies at Abbey Road 1973-1989" CD, did it ever surface on any other albums? Thanks!

"Samuel" was written by Allan Clarke originally for "Write On",and was recorded by the "classic Mark 2" Hollies line up of Clarke/Hicks/Sylvester/Elliott/Calvert over 30 June - 1/3 July 1975 at Abbey Road, Produced by Ron Richards.

Not at all Geoff, great to have someone here with such great knowledge. You should write a book, after all, looks like Bobby never will now!

Geoff,

Thank you so much for the info surrounding "Samuel". To this day, it still remains one of my favorite Holies tracks. Would love to see a "live' clip. Do you suppose they ever performed it in a live setting?

One of the most amazing things about The Hollies is the sheer amount of top quality material they have recorded from 1963 onwards...

I bought the What Goes Around album in 1985 whilst scouring the shops for ANYTHING Hollie-related.I was only able to purchase it on tape and I'm currently awaiting the delivery of it on cd.I can't wait to hear it properly.I really liked the album,it had some wickedly catchy songs. My favs are Casualty, Stop.........,I got what I want( sorry Susie) and If the Lights Go Out. By the way am I just reading too much into the lyrics or is that a song about the nuclear threat that was with us in the UK in the early 80s?
