Sad to hear of the passing of legendary Cream bass player/singer/songwriter Jack Bruce aged 71.

Jack was in The Graham Bond Organisation ( - with future Cream colleague Ginger Baker) in the early sixties, playing on several albums & singles on EMI's Columbia label ('The Sound of...', 'There's A Bond Between us' etc) then he was briefly in John Mayall's Bluesbreakers (playing alongside Eric Clapton)

then for a few months was bassist in Manfred Mann - he played on their chart topping classic hit 'Pretty Flamingo' in 1966, plus some other tracks, including the EP 'Machines' & an instrumental EP 'Instrumental Asylum' (both 1966)

Jack co-wrote with Paul Jones the tribute song; 'Sonny Boy Williamson' in 1967 featuring Jones on vocal/harmonica & Bruce playing double bass (issued as 'B' side of Paul Jones solo hit; 'I've Been A Bad Bad Boy').

Jack played bass for The Hollies between Eric Haydock's exit & Bernie Calvert's full time recruitment on 'After the Fox' (where Jack impressed Bobby Elliott by writing out his bass part when he arrived for the session !)

Jack of course then went on to legendary fame with Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker in the supergroup Cream from1966 to 1969 recording four mega selling albums and writing classics such as 'I Feel Free', 'Sunshine of Your Love', and 'White Room' etc

their posthumous album 'Best of Cream' topped the UK & USA album charts in 1969...the relatively short lived group have sold some 35 million records !

Post-Cream Jack recorded some classic solo singer/songwriter albums in his distinctive solo style; 'Songs For A Tailor', 'Harmony Row', 'Things We Like', 'Out of The Storm', 'How's Tricks', 'Automatic', 'I've Always Wanted To Do This', etc...

A 'Jack Bruce at The BBC' CD was issued a few years back, while his later recordings saw guitarists like Eric Clapton, Mick Taylor, & Gary Moore guesting on his songs.

Jack often wrote with Poet Pete Brown and his later 'Jack Bruce Band' featured Hollies arranger/guest keyboardist Tony Hymas on keyboards - three of their recorded Hymas/Brown composed tracks; 'Song of The Sun', 'Maybe it's Dawn', and 'Something To Live For' were each covered memorably by The Hollies in 1979 on their album; 'Five Three One...' while 'Something To Live For' was issued as a Hollies single too, with 'Song of The Sun' on the 'B' side.

Jack Bruce also was a part of the later seventies rock trio 'West, Bruce and Laing' recording two studio albums and a live set

Jack also teamed with Ginger Baker again plus Thin Lizzy guitarist Gary Moore for the album 'BBM' - Baker Bruce Moore

and he teamed with Ex-Procol Harum guitarist Robin Trower on a couple of memorable albums Jack being featured lead singer and bassist

in 2005 Jack, Eric and Ginger reunited as Cream for a series of triumphant reunion concerts at the Royal Albert Hall - out on DVD and screened on Sky Arts channel

A truly innovative Bass guitarist who played the Bass like a lead instrument and a wonderfully gifted songwriter/composer with a unique 'haunting' almost operatic compelling vocal style Jack was the creative 'soul' of Cream if Eric Clapton was the star striker guitar hero and Ginger Baker the powering 'backbone' of the band...together they re-wrote the Rock music book along with their good friends The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Hendrix memorably playing his instrumental version of 'Sunshine of Your Love' on Lulu's BBC TV show as his own openly spoken acknowledged tribute to Cream

Jack's musical links to The Hollies first in the mid sixties and then again in the late seventies were memorable and the legacy he has left to Rock music is unforgettable

RIP the Great Jack Bruce Cool
