So sad to hear the news about the passing of Alvin Stardust today.
Although he was born in London, he grew up in Mansfield which was my home town for many years. His parents ran a guest house in Mansfield where most of the singing stars of the late 1950s and early 1960s stayed when they were touring the country. I've always wondered if the Hollies stayed there when they appeared at the Mansfield Granada in the early days.
I recall a funny story from some years ago, probably from the 1980s. The receptionist, Norma, at the company where I used to work in Mansfield knew Alvin from back when he was known as Shane Fenton and they must have kept in touch. Alvin decided to pay her a surprise visit at work and I saw him walking up the drive. I shouted out to my colleagues that I'd just seen Alvin Stardust and one of my colleagues wondered who was most excited, Norma or me!
