Please DO dive in Emily with any comments you like...!!!

I fully agree re their 'Lynyrd Skynyrd' styled driving new take on 'Look Through Any Window' (just as the Southern Rockers might have played it) being well worthy of a place on this latest set was a real high point on the last 'Live' double album and would have opened the eyes of the wider public re the current Hollies scope as a band...

Yes, Emily!! The 'dueling guitars' of Steve and Tony on Look Through any Window are among the best ever!!! I could listen to that over and over. The Hollies lineup for the past 10-11 years is the absolute best...for me they ARE the Hollies.

A Hollies album with new songs would be very welcome! Staying Power and Then, Now, Always are the ones I play most often. I haven't heard any of Steve Lauri's songs yet, I must look into that.
Gee, I like the Rock compilation, there are some tracks you list that I can't quite remember, I'll have to look into those as well!
Why does nobody mention 'We're Through' - one of my favourites, it was dropped from the set list a long time ago. If I was having a 60s dance party (I wish), Stay would be an absolute must and We're Through.
Emily, don't get me going on the BBC guitar riffs - I went on their site to vote - No Hollies, so I didn't bother - Air, Look Through Any Window, I Can't Let Go etc. !! The Hollies always get forgotten Crying or Very sad

Hi Dawn....you should check out Steve's CD's, they are wonderful. You can hear samples on Itunes for both CD's, At Last and Curfew. Many of them would be perfect for The Hollies...just perfect, but if that never happens then we can enjoy them now thanks to Mr. Lauri!

I'm not sure why on '50 at Fifty' the versions of; 'Searchin', 'Just One Look', 'Here I Go Again', and 'We're Through' are all in mono (as stated per the sleeve) when perfectly GOOD true stereo versions with centralised vocals exist....!

'Just One Look', 'We're Through' and 'Here I Go Again' were in decent true stereo on 'Hollies Greatest' LP released in August 1968...!

while 'Searchin' (single version) was in good true stereo on a budget MFP CD released in the 90's ....

the CD booklet has a couple of songwriting credit errors too

CD one, Track 5 - 'Here I Go Again' was written by Mort Shuman and Clive Westlake, not Clarke-Hicks-Nash as is stated

On CD Two, Track 11 - 'I'm Down' was written by Clarke-Hicks-Sylvester not Clarke-Hicks-Nash as is stated.

also although the CD box claims to have: 'All Their original big hits...' that is not strictly correct
- the version of 'I Can't Tell The Bottom From The Top' included here again is the later 'revamped' version MINUS the Acoustic guitar (as was included on 'The Hollies Greatest Hits' 2CD set of 2001), while the 'Acoustic guitar version' WAS the original 1970 mono Parlophone hit single, plus the stereo version later included on 'Hollies Greatest Volume Two' (1972), 'History of The Hollies' (1975) and 'Twenty Golden Greats' (1978) compilation albums & various LP & CD compilations thereafter.....

I can't help but feel they might have left off say; 'Too Young To Be Married' (Live), 'Heartbeat', & 'Take My Love And Run' (ALL were on 'All The Hits And More' in 1988 !) - or at least put the studio version of 'Married' (which was an overseas chart topper)

the other two were singles that sank without trace...

....instead they might have better included; 'The Woman I Love' (a UK no. 42 chart entry in 1993 - thus a bigger chart hit than 'Soldier's Song' - and Allan Clarke's last Hollies single that got a fair bit of radio airplay at the time), and 'Weakness' - also maybe the studio track; 'One Way Ticket' would have gone on better instead of the Live 'On A Carousel' (a song already featured on the set earlier, while we don't really need two 'Live' tracks from 'We Got The Tunes' do we ?)

'One Way Ticket' - or maybe 'She'd Kill For Me' - could then have represented the 'Then Now Always' studio album

'Skylarks' is a quite excellent new number written by Bobby, Peter & Steve Vickers, while we really now need an ALL originals new Hollies studio album

How do we get the last paragraph of this review to the people who decide which new songs the BBC is going to play? I have recently heard new recordings by Pink Floyd and Status Quo so why not The Hollies?
