I had a great time Thursday night at The Hollies show in Crawley Very Happy That was possibly the best I'd heard them, or it may have seemed that way because I hadn't seen them for 13 months before that!! I think it was a full house, except for one seat in the front row that Ian sat in when he 'wasn't required' and he became one of the audience! They were in very high spirits. The set list, I think, was the same as the new Live Hits CD (which I bought before the show), except Too Young To Be Married in place of Emotions. I enjoyed TYTBM, I think that was the first time I'd heard it live?? I would have liked Emotions as well, with Stewball being left out - sorry, I really don't get that song....
Peter mentioned that he and Steve had been with The Hollies 10 years now! Also that Ian had been with them 22 years, Ray (Mr. Rock God) had been with them 27 years and of course Bobby and Tony, 50 years, touring every year, which got a big cheer, incredible Cool
Peter said we could get up and stretch our legs for LCW, great! After 'Heavy' they got a standing ovation and Bobby wiped imaginary (?) tears away.

Ten years ? - I recall that Peter took over from October 2004 after Carl Wayne's sad death in August 2004....which will be NINE years ago (with Steve Lauri joining about a week or so after Peter) in October of this year...


The importance of Stewball:

'Stewball' an old Peter, Paul, & Mary featured folky number was a longtime fav song of the group, it is important as it features specific passages sung by Lead vocalist , then Lead/High Harmony singers as a duo, then all three harmonise ('The Hollies Sound') which then returns back to a duo, then just to the Lead vocalist....and the full harmony then returns in unison

- thus 'Stewball' gives you a clear indication of what each of the three vocalists contribute to the overall Hollies vocal sound (Clarke, Hicks, Nash on the studio version of 1966 on the 'Would You Believe ?' album)

'Stewball', an album track at home, was also a top three single hit in Sweden in 1967

.... and was sung by Clarke, Hicks, Sylvester in the Feb 1969 Golders Green Hippodrome concert recorded by BBC TV.

'Be With You' (1976) on 'Russian Roulette' gives you an identical vocal sound guide to the 'Mark 2' (Clarke, Hicks, Sylvester) Hollies

Hello Gee, I thought the same about the '10 years' and my maths isn't brilliant, but if you count 2004 as the 1st year, then this is actually the 10th year, so I can forgive them for that.
As for Stewball, when I said I don't get it, I mean the lyrics - a racehorse that drinks wine?? The Hollies perform it very well, the harmonies are excellent, but it's just not for me. I feel it's like a record on an old gramophone player, playing at 33.1/3rd instead of 45 rpm and I want to wind the speed up.

I think Stewball is based on a famous American 'outsider' and unfancied racehorse many years ago that unexpectedly came powering through and won a big race over the clear favorite(s)

- hence; If I'd bet on old Stewball I'd be a free man today...' Crying or Very sad

The implication being the money would have 'freed' the singer from a lifetime of apparent poverty etc...


the bit about; 'he never drank water, he only drank wine...' was meant to reflect the horse was a 'winner' through and through of regal standing thus he only ever 'drank wine' being so 'classy' as opposed to just drinking mere ordinary water as all the other horses would do....etc

the song is a slower paced acoustic flavoured folk tune in the vein of Peter Paul & Mary (as is their 'Very Last Day' which was also covered by The Hollies the previous year tho' that was rocked up a bit - also a massive hit single in Sweden) plus acts like The Kingston Trio who put close vocal three part harmonies to traditional and their own commercialised formula folk and pop/folk songs (in some ways the template for CSN later and The Hollies concert 'acoustic' spot etc ) - The Kingston Trio influenced other vocal groups such as The Beach Boys, Byrds, etc...

Lonnie Donegan also recorded 'Stewball' but in a different style, faster, and with differing lyrics so that it became effectively another song entirely

by 1966 The Hollies were moving in several diverse musical directions and the acoustic folk flavoured items (their own 'Hard, Hard Year', 'Fifi The Flea' etc) were in direct counterpoint to the rockier and pop flavoured material they did....these acoustic flavoured items led to the intimate ballads ('Clown', 'Stop Right There', 'Marigold', etc) and later for Graham Nash on to 'Lady of The Island', 'Sleep Song' etc and Allan Clarke to songs like; 'Nature's Way of Saying Goodbye', 'Coward By Name' etc

Thanks for the info about Stewball, I can understand it a bit more now. Fifi the Flea and Clown would be in my top 10 Hollies songs, also Hard Hard Year is not far off, so I would find it hard to compare them with Stewball, but I'll try!!!

Just as a footnote to Stewball --I've never heard of a horse who likes wine, but quite a few of them do like beer.
