Hi all,

Thought I'd ask what was your first Hollies concert, mine was way back in 1975, my last year at school.
I remember going into the city and buying the tickets a month or so before the concert.
This was my first pop concert ever, I went to the show with my best mate.

I don't remember much about the show but the things that do stick out is the Hollies singing Let It Be and Bernie played the piano on that number. Amazing Grace and Bobby's drum solo in Blowin in the wind, Allan was singing and he dropped down and the spot light was on Bobby, brilliant stuff.
I was blown away with Tony's guitar solo in Too Young To Be Married, Too Young was a big hit here in Australia.
I'm down was a minor hit here and I remember that being played. Allan wore a leather outfit that night.
Had seats towards the back of the venue, that was fine as the venue was wide and not that long.

I did go and see the Hollies the following year and they played with a small orchestra, I saw them again in '83, '87, 2001and twice last year in the UK.

Hi Anthony.

My first Hollies concert was back in February 1967 in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire (where I used to live back then). I was also still at school! It was a package tour with The Spencer Davis Group, Paul Jones, the Tremeloes and a few others. The Hollies topped the bill, of course! I still have the ticket and programme somwhere in the loft.

I remember Allan wearing a red velvet suit and Graham asking the girls in the audience if they would like to marry Tony! You can imagine the sceams that followed!Bobby was actually ill in hospital and the band had a stand-in drummer who I believe was called Tony Mansfield (which was appropriate given the venue!). I think they only did about 20 minutes on stage and they included their new single at the time - On A Carousel.

And I've followed them ever since, going as far afield as Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Belgium and Germany. I haven't made it as far as Australia so I hope you enjoy the concert next year. I've already got my tickets for Cambridge next March.

My very first Hollies concert was in 1976 art The Hordern Pavillion in Sydney and they were brilliant. Like Anthony I don't remember much about the concert but I do remember them singing songs like The Air That I Breathe, Too Young To Be Married (with Tony's guitar solo), I'm Down, Sandy, Gasoline Alley Bred, I Can't Tell The Bottom From The Top, Long Cool Woman some of their hits from the 60's and songs from their albums Another Night and Write On (which I think had just been released).

I do remember how excited I was and I could't wait for the big night. Although I was 18 years old my parents wouldn't let me go out by myself at night (it's because I'm a girl), so I asked my older sister (who was 21) if she would go with me and to my surprise she said she'd love to so the next day we went and bought our tickets.

We were in about the 10th row from the front so we had a fantastic view of the band. All of them looked lovelier in the flesh than they did on T.V. or in photos especially Bernie who was the cutest Hollie.

I saw the band again in 1987, 2001 and 3 times (in England) in 2004. And I am going to see them again next February and I can't wait.

The first time I saw The Hollies was not until November 1997, at Wimbledon Theatre. Not being a particular fan, but liking their hit records, I was persuaded to go by a friend, who was a fan. Butterfly sung by Alan Coates with Ian Parker. left a big impression, so much so, I just had to find the song. I can't remember how I eventually got a CD of the album. Did we have websites then??
Another thing I remember being impressed with was how good Allan Clarke's vocals were on Air and Heavy - spot on.
So, ever since that concert I've discovered lots of great Hollies songs that I never knew existed. How did I survive?! Very Happy

Hi!
My first Hollies concert was in August 1967 in Vänersborg, Sweden. It was my first pop concert, and my first visit to a Folk park, and I went with my parents and my younger sister! ( Very unhip.)
It was ten o’clock in the evening on a Wednesday, rather late. I was already a fan, and I was so excited to see them live, I remember the feeling. They only played for half an hour, but they made a big impression on me.
I’ve got two photos, and the review I wrote in my diary afterwards, If you're interested in the setlist, I've got it here: http://forum.hollies.co.uk/viewtopic.php?p=6589&highlight=#6589
I saw them at the same place the next year, and the two following years in Gothenburg.
Then it wasn’t until Dalhalla 2006 that I saw them again, and after that I’ve seen them about six times, and hope for many more.

Hi Anthony,

I came across your post regarding the "first Hollies Concert" you attended by accident recently.
Co incidently, the concert at Festival Hall in Jan '75 was my "first pop concert ever" and I too took my best mate along - and I recorded it!! - on a rudimentary portable tape recorder with the microphone sticking out of a bag which I was trying to conceal it in. Apparently they had copyright laws in those days as now, and the pleadings of ignorance from a 14 year old kid may not have served as a sufficient excuse if caught.
I won the tickets in a radio competition - Melbourne's 3UZ.
I think I still have the recording of the main concert somewhere however I did find the last song (Blowin' in the Wind) which was recorded on another tape after I had to insert a new blank tape after the first was full.
I just listened to it and the audio is still discernable albeit with a "muffled" effect caused by the withering of time. Good memories of my friend and I whose voices can be heard at the end of the concert - high pitched before the onset of puberty.

I'll search for the main tape and let you know if I find it.

Best wishes

Robert G.

Good thread. I think my first concert was around 1974/75 at the old Apollo in Glasgow and saw them afterwards again in Glasgow at the Royal Concert Hall, Edinburgh; Irvine, Ayrshire and Preston, England. I recall standing at the stage door at the Scottish venues and seeing them come out afterwards and will always remember when they had James Griffin (Bread) playing when he had his first album out called "Breaking Up Is Easy" and that was amazing because we had no idea he was playing beforehand. Those days there were always nice posters in the venues and managed to get some although don't have them anymore.

My first Hollies show was in Oslo, December 1966 and it was Tony's birthday!

Isn't that something Knut, must have been very special. Great picture.

P.S. Can someone please delete my extra messages above. I apologize for the duplication but there was an error message each time I tried to post.

Thank you.

Hi there

Although I've always liked 60's music in general, I didn't become a keen fan until later, so my first concert wasn't till 2001 when the band came to Melbourne. It was at Melbourne's Crown Casino, I stayed in the Crown Tower Hotel so I was right next to the venue. I remember being blown away by the performance, getting a chance to meet some of the band members, and runnng around the hotel room in excitement afterwards.

Their first song was I'm Alive, one of my favourites. I also brought along my two Hollies dolls that I made, Graham and Tony. This time I'll be bringing along another doll, a live one. Graham and Tony are currently at my parents' place. A whole lot of my soft toy collection migrated there when Jemima was born, to make room for the baby facilities, and they are just slowly coming back to the flat one by one, each time we visit my parents.

Jemima wanted to bring Graham and Tony to Melbourne, but I had to tell her, not much room in the suitcase - in 2001 there was one of me, on this trip there are three of us.

I hope they enjoy it here and come back sometime soon in the future! This concert is going to be something I'll definitely remember for the rest of my life! Very Happy

My first Hollies concert was actually only a part of a very big show with lots of artists from the sixties and seventies. It was in 2008 at 'The Golden Years' in Antwerp. I knew the songs from the Hollies already for a long time. In the seventies one of the first singles I bought was 'The air that I breathe' followed by a double-LP with their greatest hits and the LP 'Buddy Holly'.
So I was very excited when the boys appear on stage, followed by a little disappointment that there were a new singer and guitarist in front instead of Alan and Terry. But as soon as they started to sing, it was all forgotten and I was lost for the rest of my life. Peter and Steve are definitely very talented. I enjoyed every moment of that performance and was very glad that in 2010 the boys came back to Antwerp for 'The Golden Years'. Last year I saw them for the third time very close to were I live in Belgium, it was at 'Rimpelrock' in Hasselt. They perform there for one hour and during that time I forgot everybody and everything around me. I really felt like a teenager again, taken away by the magic of the music.
Now I hope to see them again very soon, I can't hardly wait. Tony, Bobby, Peter, Steve, Ray and Ian, you stole my heart forever.
I hope somebody in Belgium can get you over for the whole show in a theater over here Idea .

Very Happy

My sister Gill and I first saw The Hollies back in 1974 - I still have the ticket stub and the programme . I had entered a competition in Record Mirror for concert tickets not because I I wanted to see The Hollies, who I didn't really know at that stage, but to see James Griffin from Bread, who was the support act. However, we were simply blown away by The Hollies and have followed them ever since. All the line-ups I have seen have had something unique to offer, but I do think Steve and Peter have brought a new energy to the group. Can't wait to see them next month! Catherine Very Happy
