Years ago, a buddy of mine (Hollies' fan) argued that if the Hollies KEPT Mikael Rickfors in the band, eventually, the Hollies would have been accepted as an "album" band. Any thoughts? |

I've often thought that would have been the case if they'd stayed in America.

Without a doubt - there's a progression to heavier album material from Hollies Sing Hollies onwards: Romany in particular has some very top-notch album tracks which would be difficult to imagine as singles. Wont We Feel Good That Morning versus Magic Woman Touch as a single --- I'm sure the former would have done 'something' in the UK charts.... |

Hi,
I am especially fond of the Clarke, Elliot, Hicks, Sylvester, Calvert years. But I have to say I think the Rickfors years are underated. As much as I love Allan, I have to say Mickael left us with some absolute gems. Love, love my "Romany" and 'Out On The Road" songs.

Hi Shari
I am fond of the Clarke, Hicks, Sylvester, Calvert and Elliott years as well. I do have 2 songs with Mikael Rickfors as lead singer on a compilation album, "Magic Woman Touch" and "The Baby". "Magic Woman Touch" I like but I don't like "The Baby" (I don't know why but I just hate that song).
All The Best
Susie

The Mikeal years left us with some great songs, I think Won't You Feel Good That Morning, Nearer To You, Jesus was a Crossmaker and The Baby were some of the Hollies best. I think his years with the band left us with a more complete sound. |

'a more complete sound' - I think I know what you mean, Anthony. There certainly is a cohesiveness to the Rickfors-era material which is difficult to describe. Mind you, I don't think they really needed the services of session musicians during this era as they had everything covered:
Guitar - Tezza, Tony and Mickael
Bass - Bernie, Mickael and Tony!
Keyboards - Bernie and Mikael
Drums - who else but Bobby.
Bloody talented to say the least! |

Hi Susie,
Perhaps you'd like "The Baby" better if you heard it live with the Tonester's absolutely awesome electric sitar intro. Mesmerised me three nights in a row in the UK last autumn.
Then, just ignore the lyrics, if they are the problem! |

I didn't like The Baby at first, but I got used to it and like it now. |

I agree Kathy,
"The Baby" took several "listens to" and then it started to grow on me.
