That's good news Rob. Have you got a big collection?

I bought one of those tapes off ebay with about 60 clips but I missed the other two tapes. Hopefully they will pop up again as I really want THE BABY.

I also hope the video quality is decent.

Micheal

Plans for a new album --- yes, I believe Alan Coates will run for US President (much more likely than a new studio album this decade) Rolling Eyes

Considering Alan is ineligible to become US President, the reality of James' prediction on a new Hollies studio album is even more more starkly revealed than it first appears. The odds for a new studio CD in ANY decade are now so infinitesimally small that they define a whole new branch of mathematics... Sad

If the Hollies last until the next decennial celebration in 2013, we may finally get as much as one new track (the first in ten years) on the inevitable All the Hits for the Fiftieth Time in Our Fiftieth Year compilation. Just remember to lower the studio mics to wheelchair height, boys! Razz

Bobby will be 72! Shocked

Will Tony still have authentic Wink brown hair?

Will botox be the only answer to Carl's worry lines?

Will Ray resort to incontinence pants to get through a 90-minute set?

(and...over the sea and far away...will Graham Nash be creating havoc amongst the randy old spinsters in Santa Fe Residential Care Home?)

Hi Anthony. The clip of 'Too Young To Be Married' which you describe seems like the very one I'm talking about. Listening to the studio version and then the live hits version always caused me to question if it actually was Tony playing the guitar solo. However, on this video when the solo is played the camera goes off Tony and seems to disappear into a sort of box like object. When the camera returns to Tony, his right hand is moving in a strumming manner (still during the solo) it makes you wonder.

I've never seen this clip but I will have my speak all the same!

The guitar on the live CD is definately not as intricate as on the studio version but live versions rarely sound as precise guitar-wise as studio versions do. So in the middle of a set Hicks might not bother to exactly finger it as in the studio. Also, the studio track likely has a Spanish guitar for that bridge? I think it would be pretty hard on stage to switch in the middle of a number to get exactly the same sound.

Having said that on the new Cat Stevens DVD Alun Davies plays a very impressive spanish- style bridge on an ordinary guitar.

I'm just thinking if Hicks is/was one of the best guitarists in Britain as has been claimed he should have been well able to play it.

Any thoughts?

Micheal

Hi Micheal. The point is this. On the video which is obviously a mime, Tony dosen't attempt to mimic the solo in any way and surely for somthing as spectacular as this solo, the camera would be on Tony all the time and not dissapearing into space Question I'm not trying to decry Tony in any way. I've seen him too often and have seen just how accomplished a player he is. It's just something I've been curious about for a very long time and I just felt this clip confirmed my thoughts.
All the best.

The solo is quite 'John Williams-ish'. I've never seen any photos of TH using a Spanish guitar, and on the live record, I presume it would be a steel-strung guitar he used for the solo/whole of the song. I don't think the acoustics were amplified in anyway, but just miked...

You can find a TV-performance (Disco '71) on the DVD 'Remember 70's vol. 1'. Does anyone know, what happened with the guitar solo of Tony? The images were cut out.

Someone on here a while back said that they'd compiled a list of all the official (non-bootleg) DVDs containing Hollies material for a fan club magazine, but it hadn't been published. Perhaps he or someone else could post a similar list on this site? Would be interesting to know exactly what is & isn't available!

Of course it's him on the studio version! It's exactly his style of playing, if someone else had played that solo in the studio he would have had tried hard to copy Hick's style. And the solo on "Live Hits" is also pretty good.
The solo is difficult to play but it's not too hard; I've learned the solo about some time ago and I am now able to play it, not as perfect as it is on the studio version but with a bit of practise it would be possible so I'm very sure that someone like Tony Hicks was and is able to play that solo.

I agree. Just because he mimed it poorly doesn't mean he didn't play it...
