My Hollies friend was watching Neil Diamond on BBC2 late Saturday night. There was a documentary, concert etc, when suddenly The Hollies appeared with 'Heavy', taking her completely by surprise! There was a section where various artists were performing songs they had recorded, written by Neil Diamond. Why The Hollies? Anyway I found it on BBC iPlayer, under TV, Music, then '....Neil Diamond Sings' Apparently Neil Diamond was the first to record 'Heavy'?? and that's why it was shown. It looks like a Top of the Pops recording when Heavy was re-released in 1988. It's as much as Tony can do to keep a straight face, with all the dancers waving their arms around |

I meant to add that The Hollies appear 21 mins into the programme, in case you don't want to watch it all. |

I watched that and was very surprised by the appearance. The Top of the Pops was certainly them performing live when it was no.1 in 1988.
However, I was more surprised by the claim that Neil Diamond recorded this first. It appears on his Tap Root Manuscript album from 1970. The Hollies version was in 1969, although Wikipedia suggests that Diamond actually recorded it earlier.
Whatever, it was a good excuse for the band to be on TV! |
