I've always liked watching American sitcoms and soaps, but one thing that has really mystified me for as long as I can remember - Shirley Partridge used to do this in The Partridge Family TV series - why do American shopping bags have no handles?? I watched an American series today which is definitely a new-ish series and it brought it all back - the woman came home struggling with her shopping, hugging two brown paper bags in her arms with loads of boxes inside! I'm sure I remember here even before the plastic supermarket bags came out, that we had brown paper bags but at least they had sort of string handles, no good in the rain of course. This has been driving me mad for the last 40 years. Is this still the case in the US? - bags with no handles? Please let me know. Sorry, I'll stop ranting now.. |

Those are mostly grocery store bags with no handles, made out of cheap brown paper.
Most bags today are plastic and have some sort of plastic. Paper bags are becoming almost rare at stores.
And anyway, my memory of paper bags with handles is that the handles would often tear off, leaving you with a big mess when the contents spilled out. |
