Here is Otis Redding performing the classic "That's How Strong My Love Is."
Of course, the Hollies would cover this track shortly after it was released.
But here's the shocker. You have to assume that Otis' band would be full of elite musicians. But check this out -- listen to the guitarist on this recording, then have a listen to the Hollies' cover.
If you're like me, you'll conclude that young Tony Hicks' performance was much more soulful, and played with more panache, and is simply more interesting to listen to, than the guitar played by Redding's guitarist on the original version.
What do you think? |

There is just no passion there at all. The musician just sounded like he was there to collect his bucks and ta ra for now. I agree you would have expected Otis to have a guitarist with at least a feel for the song and to live it Man !!! Tony Hicks speaks volumes guitar wise and definately outshines the original arrangement. |

Ahem...guys, I don't mean to be pedantic or preachy, and I actually don't know this for certain, but I think you're insulting a very legendary guitarist, Steve Cropper, who played on most Stax sessions and was/is a member of Booker T & the MGs. Granted, he (if it is indeed him) may not be playing anything fancy on this particular track, and I suppose his overall style can be characterized as minimalist, but he's a pretty-fly-for-a-white-guy freakin' LEGEND of R&B/soul guitar playing. Praise of Hicks is warranted, but not at Cropper's expense, and I think Tony would be the first to agree with that. I'll hop off the soapbox now. |

I was WELL AWARE of who the guitarist was on the track - In fact I have tremendous respect for Steve Cropper as a guitarist - I stand by my opinion and just think he sounded like he wasn't totally in to it . I wasn't aware I was insulting the guy. Cough ! |
