The Hollies enter the charts for the first time.

But, it certainly would not be the last. I copied this from a photocopy of a page from the May 25, 1963 edition of Melody Maker, and it gave us that week's chart of the top 50 singles. I must admit that I have never heard of several of the acts, and additionally am surprised at the inclusion of a few of the artists that I DO know. (**cough** Benny Hill **cough**)

And while the Beatles at #1 will not shock anyone, I'm mildly surprised that no other song by the Fab Ones was anywhere else in the charts.

1. From Me To You - Beatles
2. Scarlett O'Hara - Jet Harris and Tony Meehan
3. Can't Get Used to Losing You - Andy Williams
4. In Dreams - Roy Orbison
5. Two Kinds of Teardrops - Del Shannon
6. Do You Want To Know a Secret - Billy J. Kramer with the Dakotas
7. Lucky Lips - Cliff Richard and the Shadows
8. How Do You Do It? - Gerry and the Pacemakers
9. Nobody's Darlin' But Mine - Frank Ifield
10. From A Jack To A King - Ned Miller
11. Losing You - Brenda Lee
12. He's So Fine - Chiffons
13. Deck of Cards - Wink Martindale
14. Young Lovers - Paul and Paula
15. Say I Won't Be There - Springfields
16. When Will You Say I Love You - Billy Fury
17. Brown-Eyed Handsome Man - Buddy Holly
18. Rhythm Of The Rain - Cascades
19. Casablanca - Kenny Ball
20. The Folk Singer - Tommy Roe
21. Pipeline - Chantays
22. Walk Like A Man - Four Seasons
23. If You Gotta Make a Fool of Somebody - Freddie and the Dreamers
24. Take These Chains From My Heart - Ray Charles
25. My Way - Eddie Cochran
26. Foot Tapper - Shadows
27. The Summer Holiday - Cliff Richard and the Shadows
28. Say Wonderful Things - Ronnie Carroll
29. The Harvest of Love - Benny Hill
30. Little Band of Gold - James Gilreath
31. So It Always Will Be - Everly Brothers
32. Woe Is Me - Helen Shapiro
33. The End of the World - Skeeter Davis
34. Robot - Tornados
35. Shy Girl - Cascades
36. Just Listen To My Heart - The Spotnicks
37. Let's Turkey Troy - Little Eva
38. Charmaine - The Bachelors
40. My Little Baby - Mike Berry
41. Another Saturday Night - Sam Cooke
42. Count On Me - Julie Grant
43. Casanova - Petula Clark
44. Island Of My Dreams - Springfields
45. Some Other Guy - The Big Three
46. She's New To You - Susan Maughan
47. Forget Him - Bobby Rydell
48. Fireball - Don Spencer
49. Hey Paula - Paul and Paula
50. Just Like Me - The Hollies

Some good songs there, SpartyScott.

I was 11 years old at the time and remember most of them!

Speaking of Benny Hill, if you look at the charts for Christmas 1971, you'll see that he was actually at Number One with Ernie (The Fastest Mikman In The West).

Who would have thought that the Hollies would still be around some 47 years on from that very first chart entry?

One interesting thing to me is that two of rock and roll's early pioneers had been dead for years, yet had singles in the charts.

Buddy Holly's "Brown Eyed Handsome Man" and Eddie Cochran's "My Way" were hits in 1963. Very strange.

A man named Wink Martindale (and really, could there be two men with this name??) was a long-time host of various game shows in the U.S. See this funny video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYfrOg4WEJA

I've never heard of this Everly Brothers hit that's in the charts for that day.

"Some Other Guy" was recorded by the Beatles on the BBC, but not in the studio. Is this version by "The Big Three" the original UK hit? And while I said that the Beatles are only in the charts once, they passed on releasing "How Do You Do It" although they recorded a serviceable performance that surely would have entered the charts if George Martin had insisted on it being released. And of course we know that "Do You Want To Know A Secret" is a Lennon-McCartney composition.

Cliff & The Shadows are well-represented, #7, #26, and #27, with the Shadows having hits in their own right. (I assume that Shadows songs without Cliff are instrumentals, correct?).

I see that The Springfields have two hits. I am vaguely aware of this act. Are their singles pretty much all with Dusty on lead vocals?

There are unfamiliar (to me at least) songs by familiar American acts, such as Bobby Rydell, Tommy Roe, Brenda Lee, Del Shannon, and Little Eva.

I've scanned the list, and here are the tracks that I think would have a chance to be played on "Solid Gold" oldies radio stations in the U.S. today (and no, "Just Like Me" doesn't have a prayer of being played in the U.S.):

1. From Me To You - Beatles
4. In Dreams - Roy Orbison
6. Do You Want To Know a Secret - Billy J. Kramer with the Dakotas
8. How Do You Do It? - Gerry and the Pacemakers
12. He's So Fine - Chiffons
17. Brown-Eyed Handsome Man - Buddy Holly
18. Rhythm Of The Rain - Cascades (very popular on oldies stations not so long ago)
22. Walk Like A Man - Four Seasons
33. The End of the World - Skeeter Davis
41. Another Saturday Night - Sam Cooke

And I think that we'd be hard-pressed to hear any of the other songs on American radio today. But those that I've listed above? Sure, they're all in the rotation of solid gold oldies stations.

Hi SpartyScott,

Deck Of Cards was also covered in the 70s by Max Bygraves - now that was a criminal record!

The Big Three were another Merseybeat group and I think their version of Some Other Guy was the original UK hit.

The Shadows' hits were mainly instrumentals but they actually represented the UK in the mid 70s in the Eurovision Song Contest with a vocal song called Let Me Be The One. I think they came second.

The Springfields were a folk-pop trio with Dusty, her brother Tom and I think Mike Hurst. They produced a nice harmonious sound with some solo vocals from Dusty. I remember reading a story about when they were recording in the studio, the two men were a lot taller than Dusty and she used to stand on telephone directories so she was the same height as them which helped the recording process. Funny how things stick in your mind after all those years!

By the way, somewhere in my record collection, I've got a Searchers CD with them doing an early version of Just Like Me.

Thanks for the info, John.

I am woefully ignorant of the British music scene that predates the British Invasion of America. And even then, I really only know the acts that "made it" in the U.S. for the most part.

I would really like to hear that original hit version of Some Other Guy. I'll seek that out on youtube and give it a try.

I have a Searchers compilation disc gathering dust in a drawer somewhere. I'll have to pull it out and see if Just Like Me is on it.

And Dusty is just magnificent. Her performance of Son Of A Preacher Man was, in my opinion, one of the best performances of the entire decade. I love it, and I love her solo hits throughout the 60' that she recorded in England, too.
