I only recently noticed there are 2 different version of stereo Dear Eloise:

On the re-released Butterfly cd, Dear Eloise starts quite normal, then the count down 2, 3, 4, (writing a letter to make you....) the bass comes on very late as though he base player has dozed off and forgot to start.

On some other compilation cd, Dear Eloise has a hum (as though someone has unplugged an amplifiers) as soon as singing starts (dear eloise I am writing to say....) and as soon the verse is done, the hum stops, on this version the base comes on normally.

Their mono version sounds normal, no hum no missing bass.

Anybody can shed some light on this?

Thanks

Which re-released version of Butterfly are you talking about?

I think that I have about four re-released CD's of that album, including German Polydor and French Magic Records!

This occurs on the 1999 EMI issue of Butterfly. This has the cardboard cover and includes both the stereo and mono versions of the songs. I believe it is the UK EMI issue of the album.
I have noticed the same about the stereo version and often wondered what happened to the bass early on. But in the mono version on the album the bass is there right from the start. I can only guess that in the mono version the bass hum gets masked out in the mix, by the other instruments. You'd be amazed how tracks can sound sometimes when exposed individualy. Masking is a wonderfull thing.
But in the stereo version, it's probable that the Bass part was too exposed and exposed the hum. Of course I'm assuming it is the Bass that is responsible for the hum. But it would make sense.
Cheers Ray

I've got that release of the album, too (I know, I'm sick. But I promise, no more purchases of that album - uh, not until some new technology makes them sound better, I mean).

I'll have to give a listen to this one again.

The re release Butterfly is the EMI cd with both mono and stereo on it, the album cover is the original vinyl cover of a butterfly in brown colour. This is the one with the bass missing.

Another cd which I have and has the hum is the Polydor version the cover has the 5 band members and stencils of butterflies.

I have used CoolEdit and used the "good" bit of both versions to make a perfect one!!

I also have the mono/stereo 1999 edition and I always wondered why the bass comes in too late. So I have heard it, too. I thought that it was a mistake done while mixing this stereo version of the album "Butterfly".
