Eric Clapton once said in an article published in SOS in 2005 that the first note that Tony played on "The Ar That I Breathe"had more soul than anything he'd ever heard. What do we think of Tony's expertise as a guitarist-Comments please!!

I think he is excellent. however. for me his greatest skill comes in not making the guitar the centre point of their performances, and the same with Bobby's drumming.

In the 1970's I went to see quite a few rock bands, and used to get really bored by the drum and guitar solo's. I would imagine anyone can play lots of notes quickly, but can they play a counter melody that fits in with the song? Tony, can and when you see them live this is perfectly illustrated

What I like so much about him is his total lack of ego: think of He Ain't Heavy, no guitar playing because it would not fit in with the song, yet he was the one who wanted to record the song. There are so many other examples of this, just as there are many examples, when a strong lead guitar is needed, and when it is (like The Air That I Breathe) he is there also.

I only wish Tony would be afforded more leads in the forthcoming album. Perhaps another guitar intro ala "The Air That I Breathe" would be in order. I hate to see Tony's guitar work be under utilized. He is absolutely essential to the overall Hollies instrumental background.

I wonder how often Tony Hicks has come to an artists mind when recording an album and looking for a guest player?

It surely can't be for lack of friends in the business, of which he must have many.

Perhaps there is something in his Hollies contract which prevents him from
guesting on other peoples work.

Would be nice if he were to record an album in his own right though...

I wouldn't go as far as to say Tony is the greatest guitarist ever, but he certainly is a superb all-rounder. Let's not forget his sitar/banjo/bass contributions as well.

I'm astounded that he never had the notion to make a solo album or guest on more recordings by other artists. I guess he's happy enough with his lot!

I totally agree with marko 661. Tony Hicks has a great feeling for music, when and how to use a guitar. Many of those famous guitar heroes have not (especially Gary Moore who can destroy a love ballad with a too heavy and noisy guitar solo just to show which tricks he can and how fast he can play like the terrible long note in "Parisienne Walkways"). Just see how beautiful a love ballad solo can be when you hear "When I'm Yours". To me it's the most beautiful love ballad guitar solo ever. I love the sound of the guitar he uses and how he plays it. Everything fits. Genius!
And he can rock on guitar ("Crocodile Woman") and play excellent psychedelic songs on guitar and sitar ("Maker"). His great banjo playing has already been mentioned ("Stop Stop Stop" or "Open Up Your Eyes", "Do The Best You Can" and "What's Wrong...").
I absolutely admire his guitar playing and he should be mentioned next to all the other guitar heroes.
Thanks, Tony. Very Happy

Hear hear! Benny I think Tony must be the most underratrd guitarist ever.It has always annoyed me that he has never had the recognition that he deserved. And when you talk about these guitar greats most of them play such pretentious over exuberant ,overblown dirges, but they are the ones that are heralded genious in the guitar status world. He is so versatile and can play any style and move you emotionally weather it be a rock based riff ,melodic love song or finger pickin' wonderment-e.g Son Of A Rotten Gambler.Eric Clapton got it half right Tony had soul on Air but has been recreating that passion throughout the rest of his music life.

Tony is a fantastic guitarist! Seeing him play is just the best, as you will know Carrie Anne Smile I also really love his banjo playing and Do The Best You Can is one of my fave Hollies songs.

Tony Hicks is my favorite guitarist ever bar none.

So awesome is he, that for years I wondered if
it was really him playing all those unbelievably
wonderful solos on the records. YouTube and
the loyal fans right here answered the question for me. YES!Mr. Green

I can listen to the guitar solos of Rubber Lucy, Too Young
To Be Married, Quit Your Lowdown Ways, The Very Last Day,
Narida, When Your Lights Turned On, Frightened Lady(my fave),
and so many .many, many others and never cease to be
as amazed as I am entertained.

I know that as an American, I may sound a little(or maybe a lot)
over the top. But when it comes to Tony Hicks, I simply cannot help
myself. So I apologize if I come across any certain way. I just love
Tony Hicks, as an artist and as my inspiration.

I also dig...
When I'm Yours, To Do With Love, I've Been Wrong,Look Out Johnny,
Crocodile Woman, Hard Hard Year, Ain't That Just Like Me, We're Through,
Hey Willy,Amnesty,A Taste Of Honey(from American LP Beat Group) ... etc.

I had never really thought about it before, but you are so right.

I have seen The Hollies a few times, and when live I would say he is even better, but what I like about so much of his guitar work is that it is always in sympathy with the song, wheras so many guitarists over the last 40 years are just on some ego trip

marko, I didn't even know who The Hollies were(because here in the
states you have to be a drug addict and/or surrounded by scandal in
order to be considered worthy of rock and roll fame )i.e Beatles,
Stones, Beach Boys , Zeppelin etc... )

Clean acts like The Hollies and Paul Revere and The Raiders
(featuring Mark Lindsay), don't figure into the ... ahem ...plan.

I went to a concert at Chicagos Soldier Field when I was 19,
and saw the original Hollies, my life would never be the same.

"Who IS that cat?" I kept asking myself during the show.
"How come he isn't on the cover of Guitar Player magazine,
like every other month?"

That is why I (foolishly) questioned if were really he who
was playing on the records which I painstakingly collected
over the following couple of years.(Just try and find a copy of Out On
The Road, Write On or any of their fabulous albums here
in the pre ebay days. pfffffff Rolling Eyes ) It was tough to find
their albums but I persevered, and kept making discoveries. Cool

I wholeheartedly echo the sentiment of Neville Philpott who posted
"Would be nice if he were to record an album in his own right though..."

But you know how that goes, like ANY of Tony's solos,
it would just leave us craving more and more. No ?

Speaking of which, I could sure use a good dose of
my all time hero right now. I think I'll pop in a cd and
start with Sorry Suzanne, which has another fabulous
Tony Hicks, guitar solo.
To me the first two bars sound like his heart is crying
out in pain. How much more soul can one convey?

Hi, Lou (by the way you have a great MySpace site)!
You are perfectly right about Tony - he is probably more recognized among other solo guitarists than among rock journalists. And I can also underline that Mark Lindsay and Paul Revere & the Raiders were very good, much too underrated in Europe.

Would you believe the Hollies had power to stay by evolution of their style from Buddy Holly ? That's for certain because they follow what goes around, write on and go out on the road. They did it then, they do it now - please do it always.

Thank you Knut, my friend. Very Happy

I am just now hearing Tony's solo from Tell Me How,
off the Buddy Holly album, and it is a shining example
of how Tony, can play many notes or few, and still
convey warmth , taste , texture etc...
