Many of us know that our Terry played with the Escorts, before joining the Swinging Blue Jeans in 1966. And then moved on to big success after replacing Graham in the Hollies in 1969. But on which records did he play with the SBJ? Not all that easy, as far as I know. From the SBJ discography on the official website, there are 4 singles from that period, however I suspect that early 1966 singles may have been without him.

Don't Make Me Over What Can I Do Today HMV POP 1501 Jan 66

Sandy I'm Gonna Have You HMV POP 1533 Jun 66

Rumours Gossip Words Untrue/Now The Summers GoneHMV POP 1564 Nov 66

Tremblin Somethings Coming Along HMV POP 1596 Jun 67

Don't Go Out Into The Rain One Woman Man HMV POP 1605 Aug 67

I have checked 9 SBJ CDs, and I find in one of the sleeve notes that Terry joined shortly after the release of Don't make me over, which was their last chart entry. So one can suspect that Sandy is the first single he's on. It also says that he brought in a song called Sidney, gotta draw the line, and you can find this and several of the above songs on the CD The best of the EMI years. However not Sandy. There is a nice photo of Terry with the SBJ on the inside cover. Sandy is to be found on The SBJ at Abbey Road, and also the B-side I'm gonna have you. Sandy is of course not the Springsteen/Hollies song.

The SBJ had several European non-UK releases, and I will check with my SBJ specialist friend if any of those had Terry involvement.

A rarity on the EMI years CD is Hey mrs. housewife, a Tony Hazzard song that the Hollies was offered. It obviously did not have the quality of Listen to me, and the lyrics were quite controversial.

Another Hollies related point is that they recorded several Clint Ballard jr songs, the most famous of course being You're no good. Others he penned were It isn't there and Now that you've got me.

Would you believe the Hollies had power to stay by evolution of their style from Buddy Holly ? That's for certain because they follow what goes around, write on and go out on the road. They did it then, they do it now - please do it always.

I know that Terry was on quite a few recordings with The Singing Blue Jeans but according to him-As quoted on The Dutch Collection DVD they were past it then and he did not have any hit records with them.On saying that Terry's contribution would have been paramount as they were a brilliant band.

Just one question. The only song I know by The Swinging Blue Jeans is their hit version of "Hippy Hippy Shake". You don't hear much Swinging Blue Jeans on radio here in Germany. That's why I did not really take notice of them. "Hippy Hippy Shake" is recorded without Terry, right ? Was it recorded before he joined the band or after he left ?

It was recorded before he joined. They had their biggest success in the early 60s. I don't own anything of that group, though. will have to get me something soon!

The SBJ were a spent force by the time Terry joined them, at least in terms
of chart success.

Lots of good info on "pre-Hollies" Terry -- thanks! I too had only heard SBJ's Hippy-Hippy-Shake, but want to check out Terry's contributions to the band.

snowflake, I have just been on your Myspace site, and found the blogs about the Hollies very interesting. I have read a fair bit about them, but not those articles

From interviews I've read, Terry was chagrined that the Swinging Blue Jeans had no further hits after he joined. The band's last chart record, right before Terry joined, was an excellent rendition of "Don't Make Me Over", previously recorded by Dionne Warwick, and it even got her thumbs up. The band did record some interesting tracks with Terry, in particular a number called "What Can I Do Today", which unfortunately wasn't pushed as a single. (An earlier track, "Shakin' Feeling" was another one that should have been a single but wasn't, to the band's later regret.) They also did a good cover of The Lovin' Spoonful's "Do You Believe In Magic".

For what it's worth to anyone, here is the discography from the Swinging Blue Jeans' official site.

Yes, he sang lead on their first single when he joined, ironically called "Sandy". He also sang lead on "Do You Believe in Magic".

You're welcome. I think Terry did a fine job on "Do You Believe In Magic". The SBJ version is quite good. It doesn't have the polish of the original Lovin' Spoonful hit, but rather it's more like a garage band take on it. Interesting run through of a familiar song.

He also sang the lead on the SBJ's recorded cover version of The Beatles' "This Boy". 'Lead' for that song means those kickin' lines in the middle bridge - "Ohhhh, annnnd, this booooy....won't be happ-eeee....." Great rendition. Very indicitive of the the rough-edged "MerseyBeat" sound.
