Well said, just to pick 10 is very hard, most groups were great in the fad 60's.

I don't have anything against Roger McGuinn, he's a good singer, but what I mean with outstanding is something real special in his voice.
For example if the Hollies only had Tony Hicks on Leadvocals (that's not to say that i don't like his voice) they would have had of course a lot of great songs and albums but I would never love them like I do with Allan Clarke or Mikael Rickfors. A great singer turns a really good band into a great Band.
Of course the other bandmembers are very important too. I play guitar and drums so I'm not one of the persons that only listens to the leadsinger. What is so perfect about the Hollies is that everybody is great at what he is or was doing: Tony Hicks is my favourite guitarplayer; Bobby Elliott is a fantastic drummer and Bernie Calvert and Eric Haydock are also very good.

P.S.: On my list I've forgotten Procol Harum ...

and what does "greif" mean? I tried to look that up but it's not in my dictionary.

Hi Distant light. I think I spelt it wrong it mibby should have been 'grief' which means sorrow. I agree with what you say and take the point about Tony. Vocals have never been his strong point. But I have to say that I think Roger McGuinn is very much a singer, as are Chris Hillman and David Crosby. Like the hollies, the Byrds hallmark was the harmonies and I think everyone involved did a great job. I've been lucky enough to have seen the solo shows of Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman and they both do a very enjoyable show.
All the best

Hi Anthony Exclamation

I agree, it is hard to choose 10 favourites when there were so many brilliant performers in the 60's. Those were the days when you could actually call it music (and so were the 70's) and you could actually understand what they were singing about.

Apart from the ten I mentioned, some other favourites of mine are The Animals, The Bee Gees, The Easybeats and Cliff Richard.

All The Best

Susie

Right!!!!

Well, quite frankly if there was just one band that I could choose to listen to forever and never listen to any other music by any other artist ever again, it would be My Boys. For the benefit of those of you who don't Who-> My Boys are - yes, they're The Who->

But as for the rest.......

1. The Who->
2. The Monkees
3. The Small Faces
4. The Hollies
5. The Kinks
6. The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band
7. Herman's Hermits
8. The Animals
9. Manfred Mann
10. The Shangri-Las

You'll notice I didn't put the Beatles down. It's because I'm fed up of everyone automatically assuming that because I'm from Liverpool I immediately MUST simply adore The Beatles. Well I don't. I think they were the most over-hyped band of the 60s. Their influence may have been huge but the music was only slightly above average. There were heaps of infinitely more talented bands from the 60s. Most of them never even got signed.

HA!!! Put *that* in your pipe and smoke it...!!!!

*runs away to avoid the pointed sticks being thrown at her*

Aye Spev, The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band were very entertaining. You might have liked the New Vaudeville Band as well.

Ignoring a previous post...

1. The Beatles (I usually don't include them on any list because no one deserves to be compared with them!).

2. The Monkees (Actually one of the few 60s bands that have good "albums." Some excellent deep cuts in there, especially on their first two "total control" LPs).

3. The Who

4. The Hollies

5. Pink Floyd (hit their stride in the 70s)

6. The Kinks

7. The Stones

8. The Yardbirds

9. Simon & Garfunkel

10. The Beach Boys

My list would be like:

1 - The Hollies
2 - The Beatles
3 - The Searchers
4 - The Beach Boys
5 - Hermans's Hermits
6 - Dave Clark Five
7 - Gene Pitney
8 - Four Pennies
9 - Cilla Black
10 - Merserybeats

I recently bought CD's of The Four Pennies, Cilla Black and The Merseybeats, which I play really a lot. I never knew The Four Pennies that well, but I am amazed by the tracks on their Very Best of CD.

I also like to listen to other bands like Freddie & The Dreamers, Swinging Blue Jeans, Yardbirds, The Move, Billy J. Kramer, Monkees, Dave Dee & Co. etc., but maybe I've heard them too much to include them in the Top 10 list instead of The Four Pennies or the Merseybeats for intance.

I love much of The Beatles music, but I also think they're incredibly over-rated. Everyone goes on & ON about them, ignoring groups like The Hollies who were every bit their musical equals during the 1965-1967 era. I also think that their quality control went out of the window after 'Pepper', with quite a few very weak songs. 'All Together Now', 'Blue Jay Way', 'Wild Honey Pie', 'Why Don't We Do It In The Road', 'Savoy Truffle', 'Goodnight', 'What's The New Mary Jane', 'Dig It', 'I Want You', etc. The Hollies certainly never cut anything that weak during the same period.

So, taking the above into account, my top 10 in no particular order would have to include:

Hank Williams (one of the greatest composers of all time)

Jerry Lee Lewis (a true musical genius who can reinterprate virtually any given song)

Chuck Berry ("The Hank Williams of Rock & Roll" as Jerry Lee calls him)

Little Richard (everyone from Paul McCartney to Otis Redding to Tom Jones have tried & failed to sing like him)

The Everly Brothers (some of their hits were too lightweight for me, but we'd have no Hollies without them!)

The Beatles (mostly up until 1966)

The Hollies (particularly 1965-1967)

The Rolling Stones (the Brian Jones era!)

The Who (1965-1967 period)

Slade (Noddy could out-sing Plant & Gillan in his sleep...)

There you go! Probably a 'tougher' selection than most people on here would select, though of course it's impossible to really choose a top 10. Looking at that list I might have to change The Who for The Kinks, & I must include Iggy Pop somewhere too, & the Sweet are very under-appreciated........ Rolling Eyes

Ooops! I've just realised that this was supposed to be about 60s acts! So cross off Hank Williams & Slade, & add The Kinks & The Animals. Or maybe Them. Or perhaps The Yardbirds. The Spencer Davis Group were great too, as were The Pretty Things, & The Small Faces in their Decca period! Basically UK R&B acts from 1964-1966....

Jerry Lee, Chuck, The Everlys, & Little Richard all cut some of their finest work in the 60s though, so those choices remain.

Peter
