In reading some comments about Allan Clarke's solo career there are several references to Coward by Name. Is it meant to be a joke or is it a song that was unreleased? |

Not a joke, not unreleased.
It was a b-side from a single taken from Allan's first album, I think.
It's actually pretty good, if you're into anti-war protest songs. |

That's interesting. I have his first solo album buried somewhere but I don't remember a song by that title but also buried I know I have a 45 of Ruby and I'll have to check although I think it's a promo copy with the same song on both sides.
Ruby was as far as I know the only 45 from that album. Another question-someone said that they have a cd of My name is Arold made in Germany. Did they have it made specially or was it actually reissued? I've never seen a cd listing for that album. As for anti-war songs, the last good one I heard was when they passed out acid to the audience at a Country Joe and the Fish concert. "I feel like I'm Fixin' to get high" |

'Arold has never had a legit CD release.
Now, I do own it on CD, but that's just because I had my LP converted to digital format. So, it sounds like an LP, only it's on disc.
I would dearly love to have that album on a legitimate CD release, but I doubt that it will ever happen. |

As far as I remember, I think it was due to happen in Germany a few years ago (someone emailed me about it) but nothing transpired. I'm surprised BGO Records haven't done it yet, they'd be the most likely. |

I really want to thank everyone, especially Geoff, for all the information. I've been a Hollies fan a long time and there's so much about their records and career I never knew. Most surprising was Allan Clarke having an affair with Marianne Faithful. But what really surprises and embarrasses me somewhat is Coward by Name. At the time it came out I was just beginning to be a devoted fan, having decided to hell with the crowd, I'm going to listen to what I like. I was collecting them when Arold came out and some how I totally missed Coward, I'm sure now that my 45 of Ruby doesn't have it. |

"Coward By Name" was released in the UK only as a non-LP B-side to "You're Losing Me". "Ruby" was released in Germany, the US, and Canada as an A-side. |

This forum really has some helpful and well informed people. I've learned quite a bit here and also have a copy of Naomi and 2 Shadows on the way as a result and now I'll search for another copy of Ruby-a search of musicstack produced nothing. |

I am a long-time collector, and I have still not found a US stock copy of Allan Clarke's "Ruby" b/w "Baby It's Alright With Me". It does exist, I'm told from a reliable source, but it is very hard to find, as is the US stock copy of The Hollies' "The Baby". I do, however, have the Canadian Epic release of "Ruby". |
