Was that guy Boylan not something to do with the Eagles or one of the associated artists? I'm sure I've heard that name before.
Just been listening to the superb A Crazy Steal...can't get enough of this CD at the moment. If Richards said Bernie couldn't play bass so buried it deep in the mix he needed his head read! |

A clue here can be found on "Hollies At Abbey Road: 1963 to 1966" where just before "Yes I Will" we can hear Tony Hicks tell Ron Richards:
"Hey Ron...I'm Not gonna play solo...."
What Hicks means here is that the solo will be added by him later after the basic track is laid down....on 3 January 1965 |

I notice Terry plays bass on the video of Hey Willy - did he ever play bass in concert or on record that anyone knows of? |

I'm satisfied Tony Hicks did play the solo on Too Young To Be Married as it is very much in his style. If you listen to the solo on, I think, Frightened Lady on the same album you can hear some similarities. He often seemed to finish solos in a slighlty Spanish/clasical influenced style which just fits with the TYTBM solo.
Also, the other live version of the song from Australian TV in '71 or whenever on YouTube has a much more faithfully reproduced solo. |

I can't respond 100% yes to your question, but at the 1972 concert, all of the band members (with the exception of Bobby) switched instruments for nearly every song, so Terry may well have played bass during the course of the evening. |

Don't you wish you'd had a camcorder that night? |

Or at least a tape recorder. I could have gotten it into the auditorium, too. It was back in the good old days when there was no security screening, and you could actually smoke pot and not be hauled out of the place, too. Some guys passed a joint to me during the show. |

Playing each other's instruments and the audience smoking illegal substances - this is not the clean cut Hollies the press was always going on about! |

I think The Hollies could be a bit naughty on occasion. Isn't everybody? |

Just one word about "Like Everytime Before".
Thank you for the information. Now I understand what happened to the version on the box set. It always disturbed me to listen to the solo part without Tony's solo. Why didn't they select the mono version then instead ? It disturbs me less to listen to the mono versions than to listen to "gaps".
In most cases I also listen to the mono versions of their first four albums on EMI CDs. The stereo mixes of tracks 13-24 sound quite strange. And if any body has noticed the window crashing sound at the end of "Too Many People" is missing on stereo track 18 on the EMI CD. That's quite annoying because I think it's a great ending for this song and it shows that The Hollies could have ideas before The Beatles had them!As far as I know The Beatles did not use noises on their recordings before 1966 and the third Hollies album is from 1965.
Well, my point is to say that I think that the Nash albums with The Hollieswould need a new stereo mix.
Oh, and dear EMI, I WANT "OUT ON THE ROAD" IN PERFECT STEREO SOUND [/quote] |

Sounds like you need the bootleg version of that album. |

Haven't we heard that Out on the road will get an official sound upgrade by EMI in the not too distant future? |
|

Oh, really ? I haven't heard anything about that. And I guess that EMI will release other Hollies albums remastered first before they will think about OOTR.
But if you are right, Knut, then I really can't wait for that EMI realease of OOTR. It's my favourite Hollies album. |

my 2 cents ...
I think I read somewhere that Jack Bruce, was the
bassist on the Bus Stop single. Also heard that
somewhere along the way in the latter part of the
60's, Bobby Elliott missed some sessions and was
replaced by a studio/session cat for one of the albums
Too Young To Be Married(think I've mentioned this elsewhere)
The solo on the studio version is played
on a nylon string classical and sounds like it
utilizes open strings for the pull offs. Add to that
the far softer feeling of the string tension on a classical guitar
which is a combination of it's string material AND the
scale length of the instrument(usually around 26")
Compare then that to playing a Martin style steel string flat top
guitar with a capo at ... oh I dunno' ... the second fret.
That certain licks will have to be alternately fingered
from the get go. Those capoed and therefore shortened
steel strings do not give quite so supplely either, giving
the LIVE Too Young Too Be Married solo a stiffer audio texture.
Somewhere on this board I started a thread in which I posed
the question Is it always Tony every time? I was assured by
long time fans the world over , it is. |
