In case anyone has not heard John Miles own 1983 version.....

John Miles actually only issued his own version some two years after appearing as The Hollies Special Guest Vocalist duly singing Falsetto Vocals on The Hollies fine version of his song "Carrie", which was recorded over 6-7 July 1981 at Abbey Road Studios....but not issued until much later.....on album in November 1988 on "Rarities" (EMS 1311), and of course just before that as 'B' side to the UK Chart topping re-iisue of "He Ain't Heavy...He's My Brotther" 7 and 12 inch singles of August 1988 (EMI EM 74 / EMI 12 EM74 ) and CD single issued September 1988
( EMI CD EM 74)......

John Miles' own version of this "John Miles - Bob Marshall" compostion can be located on his 1983 album "Play On" (EMI EMC 1651471) where it is fourth track out of five on Side Two of the album.

John Miles' solo verson of "Carrie" duly features some really seasoned UK Musicians...The Hollies old friend and seventies keyboardist/arranger Pete Wingfield is featured on Electric Piano with 10 C.C. man Duncan Mackay guesting on Synthesisor , Sometime Eighties Shadows Bass guitarist Paul Westwood, plus Cliff Richard backup men The Late Martin Jenner (Acoustic guitar), Graham Jarvis (Drums) and Frank Ricotti (Tambourine), join John who himself plays both Lead guitar and Piano on the track....backing vocals are by John, Katie Kissoon,Pete Wingfield and Jimmy Chambers....

John's version (and the entire album) was Produced by Elton John / Lindisfarne etc Famed Producer The Late Great Gus Dudgeon...
whom I recently suggested might have made a fine Seventies Producer for The Hollies themselves....

John's version is in a far more "Laid Back" style with a much gentler Lead vocal and dominant Keyboards....curiously John completely dispenses with the distinctive Falsetto "Counter vocal" part he himself was featured singing so memorably on The Hollies earlier 1981 version.....while backup vocals are far more behind his Lead vocal in the mix.....and likewise the guitars are purely supportive here...

The Hollies version being clearly styled as a "potential single" rather than John's very "Album Orientated" track....

John's version has a definate ending as opposed to The Hollies fadeout ending....

Geoff,

You mentioned that Gus Dudgeon would have made an ideal producer for the 1970's Hollies. Looking ahead to 2008 and beyond, who do you personally feel would be a good producer for the current lineup, should they choose to record again?

I wonder whether, in view of his considerable experience in working on new albums by Paul McCartney, Pink Floyd....etc, plus his excellent ork in restoring and completing vintage tracks by both The Hollies ("Schoolgirl", "Sign of The Times", "Samuel" etc) and The Beatles on The "Anthology" and "Love" perhaps Tony's son Paul Hicks...who is now a much respected Recording Engineer (as were of course both Gus Dudgeon and Norman "Hurricane" Smith ) might make an excellent Producer for The Hollies....?

Did they really think another "Carrie" could stand next to the one and only "Carrie-Anne"?
