Wow. Don't let anyone ever say that this group was nothing beyond "Silence Is Golden."
A friend of mine just gave me a copy of a Tremeloes compilation CD, and for the most part, I got what I expected: uninspired pop/rock including covers of Dylan, Buddy Holly, and Motown & R&B songs.
But oh my goodness, then I listened to Ain't Nothing But A House Party.
This song has all the energy of, say, the Hollies Nitty Gritty/Something's Got A Hold On Me. And if you knew my taste in Hollies music, you'd know that this is high praise indeed from me. I just love the way the Tremeloes perform on this song.
I heartily recommend this song. |

check out the guitarwork on "Runnin' out","Suddenly Winter","Too many fish in the sea","Try me",...."Call me Number One",the country playing on "Hello Buddy",
their vocal work on "Negotiations in Soho Square""Shake Hands [and come out crying],"As You Are",and "Be Mine",the harpsichord work on "All the world to me",
Songs "You" and "Come on Home" were very early Gilbert O'Sullivan tunes [1966/67]. |

I like the Tremeloes' version of "I Shall Be Released". My favourite is "Here Comes My Baby", simple but with drive. My friends play it sometimes in clubs and my feelings are as high as when they play something by the Hollies |

Geoff, why is it that I suspect that the Tremeloes are one of your two or three favorite groups of all time? |

My "big three" are the Hollies, Beatles, and Badfinger. I'm proud to say that I have the complete released collections - at least in CD - for each group. And, if I'm allowed to say so, as many boots from all of them as I've been able to dig up.
Other long-time favorites include bluegrass artist Alison Krauss, Bob Seger, Bruce Springsteen, The Who, Yardbirds, Cream, Johnny Rivers, Rick Nelson (pre-country), and Elvis. I guess you have to toss in the Rolling Stones, too, although I haven't liked ANYTHING of theirs aside from a concert album since Tatoo You.
And even though they were a "real" group for only the Headquarters album, I have a life-long love for the Monkees. Call it a childhood guilty pleasure.
There are also a bunch of groups that I adore four or five songs each by, but have little interest in their whole catalog. Among others, those would include the Buckinghams, Turtles, Raiders, Mindbenders, Byrds. |

Wow, Geoff, you really are a historian! Trems aren't even near my top, but I certainly like their songs.
I've been more into psych than pop lately (well, for several years). I don't actually know what was or wasn't a hit, and I don't really care. There have been many albums released for the first time in the past few years... And they are such treasures!
I started with the Beatles, the Kinks and the Hollies, of course. The Hollies are my top, followed by Kaleidoscope, Zombies, Kirkbys/24rd Turnoff, Tales Of Justine, Nirvana, Grapefruit, Turquoise, Moody Blues, and many many more from all over the world. For example, one of the best songs I've ever heard is "Never Die" by the Haigs (Dutch band with only a few singles). Has anybody heard it? It has everything!!! |

Regret I have not heard the song you mention...in the UK the main radio stations don't feature many European bands [shame !],they don't even like "veteran" acts either ! [aside from a few specialist stations].
Hopefully with the charts now determined by downloads too, things might improve and get us all beyond the "hyped" singles....to ALL artists new or older, and all countries too...
You have good taste on the other bands you mention ! |

The Tremeloes had made lots of great tracks. I didn't like them first because I hate "My Little Lady" but then I heard "Call Me Number One". I still think it is one of the best 1960s tracks ever. Then I Bought the compilation: The Tremeloes: Good Times - The Ultimate Collection. Then I realized that they had made great records. Other favourites are: I Shall Be Released, Hello World, Me And My Life, Too Late To Be Saved and, of course, Silence Is Golden.
AND, I like The Monkees, as well. I have never seen their comedy TV show or the film "Head" but I have all of their albums and I like their work as a band. Even on their later albums you can find great tracks, such as "A Man Without A Dream".
And it is also worth to listen to The Byrds albums. It seems, as if they reinvented themselves again and again with every album and in many cases they actually did as a band line-up. But they always sounded great. Even on hated Byrds albums, such as "Byrdmaniax" you can find great songs, such as one of my absolute Byrd favourites "Jamaica Say You Will".
But all in all there are no bands comparable to The Beatles and The Hollies. |

It seems you are not alone,The late Alan Blakley of the Tremeloes apparently ALSO hated that song too !...the band wanted to do their own material...or songs they loved such as Bob Dylan's "I shall be released" etc....But their record company wanted "hits" thus a compromise was made...they got to do the "B" sides [like Hollies up to 1966]
and then, again like Hollies, finally got to do their "A" sides such as "Call me Number One","Me & My Life" etc...The "B" side of "My little Lady" was their own "All the world to me",a fine pop song with great harpsichord work...which I think was far superior to the "A" side !,it had a great Len"Chip"Hawkes lead vocal too. |

I've always LOVED "Suddenly Winter" by The Tremeloes, an absolutely fantastic psychedelic track. Here in the US it was put on the flip side of "Suddenly You Love Me". Funny, two "Suddenly" songs on the same disc. |
