I believe the scenario was the recording of "Carrie" with Bruce Welch producing, and neither Terry nor Bernie were wanted, leading to their permanent exit from the band. |
Why quit over the recording of one song? |

I've never understood why people always pick up on Richards' comments about Bernie not being a great bass player but never mention his remark in the same liner notes that lots of the top session guitarists of the day played on the Hollies records. |

"Carrie" was NOT Produced by Bruce Welch....
...it was Produced by it's joint composer John Miles who also guested on Falsetto vocal on the song.....
"Carrie" was Recorded over 6-7 July 1981 just after Terry & Bernie had both left... but was rejected by Polydor Records as a single...
The song they were then working on with Bruce Welch as Producer, during the recording of which Terry & Bernie departed was a Clarke-Hicks composition aptly titled; "I Don't Understand You"
They cut the first "Sylvester" version of this at Odyssey studios on 21 April 1981 |

Geoff, I do understand You! "I donīt understand You" is a terrific Hollies-recording!! I donīt understand why itīs never offically released. But the Rockīn Beat release is the the Labi Siffre-version, isnīt it?
Or maybe I donīt understand....? |

I was advised at the time that The Rock'n' beat version actually does in fact feature Terry Sylvester. |

As I understand it Rockīn Beat was stopped from selling the cd (RB203). They didnīt have the rights to "I donīt understand You". This is the information that I got. And You canīt find the cd anymore at their site. I suppose itīs withdrawn.
An odd observation. On the sleevenotes itīs said to be a single in 1981!!
Iīm asking the same question as You, Geoff; how did RB get hold of the recording??
If You get any information on whoīs singing the high vocals (Terry or Labi Siffre), please let us know! |

If I find out I will of course let you know....the big problem is that it was NOT a happy period for the band...or a successful time either... |

I was under the impression that the Rock-in-beat CD's were bootlegs of a sort anyway...? |

You are quite right James....BUT they were VERY well made Bootlegs !
I think the Rock'n'Beat version of "Out On The Road" was by FAR so much Clearer and in Sharper Sound than the terrible French Magic records so called "Official" version....which sounded like a poorly mastered "Muffled" copy of a copy of a copy....!
"The Last Wind" sounded particularly "Muffled" on that weak French Magic version...but it sounds "Clear as a Bell" on the "Unofficial" "Rock'n'Beat" version.....!
.....and who is that "R'n'B" guy anyway...? (Maybe an "Official" Record Company ought to snap him up....?)
IF EVER an album was long overdue Crystal Clear "Newly Remastered Mix" by EMI (UK) at Abbey Road Studios.....with some choice rare and Unissued "Bonus" Tracks....it is this album (BIG Hint EMI !)
Although strictly speaking they ARE bootlegs "Rock'n'Beat" CD's of a number of classic sixties artists HAVE been advertised for sale by several UK Mail Order Companies as "Unauthorised recordings"....... |
About 2 years ago I ordered the 6 cd set by the Hollies on PCR , offered on the rock n beat site . Nice artwork and song selection . A and B sides from 1963 - 1983. I can only assume that these were also "unlicensed" recordings because they came from the Future CD's section of the site. |

Thanks for this James, it brought a tear to my eye. To see good old Bern after all these years. What a lovely man and a great musician. He added so much to the Hollies and their sound. Thanks again James . |

Yeah James,Thanks a lot, it's good to know that Bernie is still out there going strong. You said you'd been listening to some classic Bernie Bass moments-Which made me think about the brilliant bassline on Jennifer Eccles-class. Bernie definately one of the best!! |
