There is a photo of Jimmy Saville in front of the same chart here:
http://www.televisionheaven.co.uk/totp.htm
which suggests that it must be the first Top of the POPs.
I think i am right in saying that at that time the BBC used a chart which averaged out some of the music papers charts (NME, Melody Maker and Record Mirror I think). I suspect Guinness used the NME chart for that time so it is difficult to compare. It was some years later that the official UK chart came into being and used by the BBC. |

Heres' the cover of a "Carrie-Anne" and "Signs that Will Never Change" single picture sleeve. It suffices to say that it was a very cold day when this photo was taken, and no one was in any mood to smile for the camera, or maybe the photographer told them not to! Allan doesn't look uncomfortable here at all, but Tony looks like he's asleep!

Here's another favorite of mine. I wish it were larger. This was probably taken in late 1963 or early 1964. You can just feel the energy these guys are letting out, and I can even hear Allan shouting!

Oh my God Vrinda this is just soooooooo amazing .I can just here the crowds screaming, the boys belting out something like"Monkey Business",Bobby rhymatically smashing those cymbals,Allan sreams Waaaaaah!and a couple of girls faint on the spot .The room is hot and sweaty, buzzing with noise, excitement and of course lust .(Note I'm the girl at the front with my hand practically on Allan's knee ).I think I'd better go now and lie down,it's all been too much for an old bird like me .Thank you so much,Pet.You never cease to amaze . |

I wish that photo was enlarged, too.
I'm interested to know if Graham's guitar actually has strings! |

Thanks, everyone!
John, I have no idea where it was taken. Maybe Geoff can clear that one up?
Sparty, I can't make out any strings on Graham's guitar, but I'm sure it had them, otherwise he couldn't play live!
I wish I was the girl touching Clarkie's knee. That must have felt good! Katdowl, you and I think so much alike. I was born a good seventeen years after this photo was probably taken. We missed out on so much!
Paula, I think Allan might be jumping up like that because that girl's hand is on his knee! If I were that girl, I wouldn't let go! |

Yes, I totally agree with both Katdowl and Vrinda.I too was born too late to have experienced this greatness when it was in it's infancy .It must have been so exhilarating and stimulating to have lived through all this .It's exactly how I feel when I listen to the live cd in the boxset.Wow!Pure energy and vibrancy .This pic just so captures the whole feel of the time.Vrinda I thank you again . |
