I think that last pic has appeared on a 'searchin' picture sleeve or promotional ad before. The hand positions give it away All of them look so young thanks Vrinda! |

Once again, it's my pleasure, Paula and Katdowl! Allan's hair is so short that it took me a while to see any resemblance between himself there and how he looked a year later. Maybe they're searching for us female fans in that picture, because they know how much we love looking for and at them! |

I said I would post the photo that first attracted me to Allan. This may not seem like the best photo of him, but there was something about his smile here that got my attention - that and Erics's shades!

Here's a very suave looking Allan, flashing us those beautiful teeth.I wonder do Bobby's knees sound as good as his drums.Love that guitar of Graham's with the Hollies name written down it's front.Vrinda,I can see why you were knocked off your seat when you saw this for the first time.Good old Clarkie has that effect on me in almost every pic I've ever seen of him. Thanks for sharing the memory. . |

The interesting thing to me about that photo is that a Beatles LP is listed with a bunch of singles in what I must assume was the current charts.
Were there no separate album and singles charts in the UK at that time?
For that matter, if someone has access to the UK charts from that time week by week, then one can probably narrow down the date of the photo to a particular week. |

I would guess that this picture is from the very first edition of Top of The Pops on 1st January 1964. |

shows that this LP actually made the singles chart as well as the LP chart, number 11 being the highest ever that any LP made. |

Behind Eric, there is the word "Kiss" as the first word of a song title. It says "6" next to it. The number and song above it is "5" and "Twist and Shout" by the Beatles. That should narrow things down a bit. All we have to do is find out when "Twist and Shout" was #5 on the UK charts.
P.S. Thanks for the link, Keith! |

Thanks for the info, Geoff!
Graham and Tony's hairstyles are what they were still wearing in 1964, evident in other photo from that time, plus the "Swinging UK" films of them singing "Baby, That's All" and "Here I Go Again." I've seen photos of them dated 1964 where they are wearing such suits, but since the chart has to be from at least late 1963, and the first episode of Top of the Pops aired on January 1, 1964, then - at the latest - this must be that first episode, as John pointed out?

Whatever the higher chart placing as shown for The Shadows "Geronimo" seems to not tie up with the Historical Chart placing details.... |
It could be a lower chart placing, if the songs were listed with the highest first and the lowest last. |

I wanna be your man-Rolling Stones went to number 12 in Nov 63 and You'll never walk alone went to number 1 in Oct 63,so I think the chart is late 63,early 64,possibly one of the first.Maybe!According to my Guinness Book of Hits Of The Sixties Geronimo either hit number 11 on 5th Dec 63or entered the charts then. |
