I'm not sure if you are all familiar with the following broadcast on 15-5-1971:

http://www.sandranet.com/rodisc/rni-mayday150571.mp3

This is the rare uncensored version!

It's considered a very important part of off shore radio history.

greetings,

Thanks for posting that, Robert! That was interesting, to hear the May-Day calls amidst Hollies's songs. What happened to the ship?

Radio North Sea (Noordzee) was at the time a very popular European piracy station.
They broadcasted a few miles from the Dutch coast as this was the way the Dutch and British government could not do anything against their broadcasting.

All over Europe people could listen to the mayday requests, which suddenly interupted their programme after the bomb went off.

It was sensational news. Most people never realised that the songs were by The Hollies. The Hollies were never mentioned, no hits were played and the album was already a few years old. It would have been a great promotional stunt with lots of sales!

After this incident radio North Sea stopped. The ship was sold to Libia for broadcasting purposes, but the ship sank in Libian waters.

Sorry!

Although the ship was half burnt the broadcasting continued until 1974. In 1974 laws changed which made Radio North Sea stop. In 1976 the ship moved to Libia, where Colonel Ghadaffi wanted to use it.
