I totally agree SheLenka...nothing is purer.

I agree too. While it doesn't hurt to experiment, doing anything that tampers with natural sound to distort it is unwise.

I Think it depends.....listen to the "Echo" on Allan Clarke's voice on LCW (or indeed on John Fogerty's on the Creedence classics that inspired it...),
I think it is the combination of studio "effects"....and the natural voices and plain instruments that is the most effective and bands such as Hollies, Beatles etc, were all masters of this....

I don't think there is a formula for a perfect combination of natural voices and manfactured sound. That comes about through trial and error. The Beatles and the Hollies got it down with all the songs you mentioned, but the latter did do wrong with Lullaby to Tim. You can't win them all!

True a few things went wrong...the vocal collage on the first "If The Lights go Out"...

I actually rather like this! Shocked Laughing

Lullaby To Tim, is, however, quite horrible. Had a listen to the Evolution album for the first time in ages, some nice items on there, but the albums either side of this are much better.

I think The Hollies felt it didn't really work....thus they did not repeat it on that second "Nash Version" on "What Goes Around"....
and also like the greatly reduced "echo" on Clarke's voice on the later "Live" version of "Purple Rain"....
But for us all it is obviously just a matter of individual taste....

I would say that the second version of 'Lights' has more of an 'urgency' to it, certainly the bass style is more in keeping with the song. Was it not Bruce Welch who moaned about Bernie's bass playing that was a catalyst for the 1981 split?

So I believe, however I don't think they were ever going to sack Bernie....and it was only on Terry's shock exit that Bernie finally decided "enough was enough"
