"Tie Me Kangeroo Down Sport"...By The Beatles...??
Well yes !, we know The Hollies did "After the Fox" with Peter Sellers in 1966...
But back in December 1963 The Fab Four also did an "off the cuff" Comedy song backing up the much loved Australian Entertainer Rolf Harris (pre "Animal Hospital" days !) who was their compare for "The Beatles Christmas Radio Special" on BBC Radio that xmas.
Rolf quickly arranged an impromptu version of his own chart hit with the lads, featuring Rolf on "Wobble Board" and Beatle backing....
I can't remember the first two verses fully (this is from memory so it may be a little incorrect ! ) but I think verse one began:
"Keep the songs coming on,John
Keep the songs coming on..."
Chorus : "Tie me kangeroo down,sport...."
Verse Two began (I think)
"Write your words on the wall,Paul
Write your words on the wall...
Chorus : "Tie me kangeroo down,sport..."
Verse three Rolf missed his timing first time ( John & George chimed in "You forgot the words,Rolf...!")
But then it went:
"George's guitar's on the "blink" I Think,
I Think George's Guitar's on the "blink"
it just went "plonk" when it should have gone "plink"
George's guitars on the "Blink"....
Chorus...
Verse four:
"Don't ill treat my pet Dingo,Ringo
Don't ill treat my pet Dingo
He can't understand ya "lingo",Ringo
So Don't ill treat my pet Dingo...."
Chorus...
Last Verse: (Slowly and dramatic...with a slow Harrison guitar and Ringo drum roll...)
"Tan me Hide when death comes, chums
Tan me hide when death comes...
So we tanned his Hide when he died,Clyde
and now Ringo's got it on his drums...!
Final Chorus...
In between the verses on the choruses :
"Tie me Kangeroo down sport, tie me kangeroo down.. "
Messrs Lennon /McCartney /Harrison all harmonised along with Rolf,
With John & Paul slotting in a Beatleish : "Oooo..."
(to which Rolf laughed "Oh I love it...!")
At the conclusion George and John added an emphatic guitar ending !
For some strange reason this "epic" recording NEVER made it onto the "Beatles At The BBC" album (!)...it was one of those silly comedy items that The Beatles were always "up for doing"...Never "too big" for a quick skylark or to "belittle" themselves either !, Their witty appearances on T.V. with Morecambe & Wise (2 December 1963) and also Mike & Bernie Winters (1 August 1965) were very fondly remembered by the UK Public....
The Hollies used to "joke" about in concert then too...On their "live" Version of "Too Much Monkey Business" Graham Nash would launch into the Lovin' Spoonful's "Daydream" to group shouts of :"Wrong !"
While Allan Clarke would sing: "People Try To Put us Down..." from The Who's "My Generation"....The Hollies also used to launch into "A Hard Day's Night" then stop Graham would say to the audience : "just Testin' ya !..."
I wonder how many "serious" bands now would "skylark" about as The Beatles,Hollies and their contemporaries used to...? or perhaps they are all far too busy tryin' to appear "cool"....? |

I wonder how many versions of "Too Much Monkey Business" were sung. I know the one with "Daydream". There is a video where Graham starts: "Baby's good to me, you know" (I Feel Fine by the Beatles) and he becomes "unsure" with the reactions and in the end he is looking a "ashamed". Very funny! |

Hi SheLenka !
Yes Graham would also dive into that Beatles song....!
Later in the 80's The Hollies (with Alan Coates) would begin "Monkey Business"..... then suddenly stop and Allan Clarke would say :
"We can't do this.....where's Graham...?" |

Hi all!
On the outdoor stage at Liseberg, Gothenburg, August 1970 ,the Hollies did a great version of too Much Monkey Business as their last number. In the middle of the song, Allan started to sing the Mungo Jerry hit "In the summertime ..." and the others started to clap to it. |
