Hi Geoff,
I wouldn't wait for any radio (and if so, I would choose a specialised internet radio). There are many great compilation CDs of unknown gems, such as Nuggets, Nederbeat, Green Crystal Ties, Rubble... to name only a few. It is such a pity these aren't known too much, they would bring joy to many people. And definitely to the Hollies fans.
Another example, this time from the USA, not really an unknown group: the Royal Guardsmen - before they started with the Snoopy songs, the recorded "Any Wednesday". It is, again, one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard.

Monkees aren't bad but with the hundreds of bands I would easily forget them (thanks for reminding me Wink ). My favourite US bands (except those well known such as the Byrds) are the Choir, the Cyrkle, the Grodes, the Aerovons (they recorded in the Abbey Road studios and are often mistaken for a UK band), the Gants, the Grass Roots...
Dutch bands: the Motions, Golden Earrings...
Swedish: the Tages, the Mascots...
German (not everething is Krautrock): the Petards, the Rivets...
Australian: the Twilights...
the rest of the world: Thor's Hammer (Iceland), Hungaria (Hungary), Mops (Japan)
and there are lots and lots more.

Funny you should mention The Aerovons...our UK "Record Collector" magazine did a feature on them a while ago...I think they used Ringo Starr's old ludwig drumkit for a recording session at Abbey Road... as You could see "The Aerovons" on the bass drum with "The Beatles" clearly showing underneath their name !!!

There is nothing wrong in being a Monkees fan !....two actors and two widely different American musicians "thrown" togeather for a television show about a "mythical" pop group...[ Steve Stills and Bryan Maclean of "Love" failed the auditions !], yet they ended up making some wonderful sixties music....and promoted the works of Neil Diamond,Harry Nilsson,John Stewart,Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart among others
John Lennon thought they were latter day Marx Brothers [ in the show]...Mickey Dolenz was/is s a tremendous personality, and as you say, from "Headquarters"[which has an American "Civil War" meaning...!!!] they COULD do it themselves.
Guitarists Louie Sheldon and Gerry McGee [of The Ventures],plus Drummer Hal Blaine, arranger David Gates [of Bread],and co were all top session men etc....also playing on Mamas and Papas and Simon & Garfunkel records among others...

Alan Jardine said he never got any sleep between 1964 and 1970,being a "Beach Boy"....Actor Leonard Nimoy said "Star Trek" was his "life" between 1966 and 1969,taking up all his time working on the show....The four guys in The Monkees did both !!....
....and Mike Nesmith still found time to write "Mary Mary" a hit for Paul Butterfield...while Mickey and Peter [who was a very serious guy having to play the "group fool"],also wrote good songs....where did they get the energy ?
The "serious music" press then just insulted them [not so the musicians, like The Beatles who DID respect them]
So be proud to say you liked them Scott. They were great lads !
The typical "garage band"....and the show [now out on DVD] is a classic of "sixties madcap humour"...with guest spots by Frank Zappa [as "Mike Nishmouth" !], and the late, great Tim Buckley.
Ever see that weird film "Head",they did with Jack Nicholson ?

Hi Geoff and everybody!
It's nice to see that you and many others here like the Monkees. I'm a Hollies fan, but it was the Monkees who introduced me to pop music, and I'll always be thankful to them for that.
When I was growing up in the 60s, I thought pop music was loud and noicy, and I didn't bother to listen to any of it. But in 1967, that magic year, Swedish television started to broadcast the Monkees show , once a week, and I was caught. I loved those four guys (especially Peter), and their music too. If this was pop music, it was certainly worth checking out. So I did, and, at the age of 13, I found a new world.
Eventually I heard a song called Stewball on the radio, and I was caught again, this time by the amazing harmonies. I became a Hollies fan, and a few years later I even joined their Official Fan Club.
I've got a good documentary on the Monkees that I've videotaped. "Hey, hey we're the Monkees", I think it's called.
It's good news that the shows are available on DVD. It would be nice to watch them again, and show them to my teenagers and see what they think.

Agneta
