No, I'm not asking for comments on songs that none of us have ever heard. Instead, I'm talking about the Hollies studio tracks that were not issued when originally recorded, but instead sat in the can for years before eventually seeing the light of day on a legitimate (not bootleg) Hollies CD or LP. For purposes of this discussion, let's exclude from consideration the Out On The Road album, which of course was released -- not in England or the U.S., alas -- less than five years after recording.
So what is there to choose from?
1. Many of the tracks off of the unfortunately out of print Hollies Rarities album (If It Wasn't For The Reason, Sanctuary, Eleanor's Castle, Mexico Gold, The Times They Are A-Changin' (Live), She Looked My Way, Louisiana Man, etc.)
2. Stuff from the 30th Anniversary triple CD set like I Understand, Man With No Expression, You In My Arms, She Gives Me Everything I Want, I Can't Get Nowhere With You.
3. Songs released as part of the Abbey Road discs (early version of We're Through, Schoolgirl, Tip Of The Iceberg, Samuel, Come Down To The Shore, Lovin' You Ain't Easy).
4. Anything else that occurs to you that was not released by the band but has since had a legitimate (not bootleg) appearance on a Hollies disc. I'm thinking that Little Bitty Pretty One, Zip-A-De-Doo-Dah, and Poison Ivy (take 9) from the "Gold Collection" release qualify as such.
5. Oh yes, let's also not consider the BBC stuff off the big box set like Shake or She Said Yeah. Why? Because this is my thread, and I don't want them included in this discussion!
For me, the best of these songs comes down to these three finalists: Tomorrow When It Comes, Tip Of The Iceberg, and Man With No Expression.
As an aside, I'll ask anyone on what CD's has the studio version of Purple Rain been released. If it has never seen an official release, I would have made that track a finalist, too.
But, since I said to select one song, I've got to make a decision for myself, so I'm going with (drum roll, please) ...
Tip Of The Iceberg, because it absolutely ROCKS! |

I'd have to pick three: "Tip of the Iceberg", "If It Wasn't for the Reason", and "Mexico Gold". They all would have made excellent single choices. |

My fave unreleased song is off the 3rd Abbey Road CD, Loving You Ain't Easy - I just love the way the song builds slowly, then Bobby kicks in with the drums and the chorus harmonies are just amazing.
Fair makes the hairs on my arms stand up. Both of them!

Mexico Gold
Tip Of The Iceberg
Samuel
How the hell did they manage to 'forget' about these? |

My favorites are the same as James's although I like most of the unreleased songs you've mentioned (except Louisiana Man).
Samuel (my favorite)
Mexico Gold

My choices would be:
Samuel
If It Wasn't For The Reason
Tip Of The Iceberg
The first two feature strong melodies and great harmonies while "Iceberg" is a solid rocker combining both. Can anyone tell me what the Hollies lineup was on "Samuel"? I remember asking Terry Sylvester about this track and he didn't recall singing on it. |

I think Samuel was recorded around the time of the Write On sessions and would be Clarke/Hicks/Sylvester/Calvert/Elliott. Tony added extra guitar work for its release in the late '90's as part of the 'At Abbey Road' series. |

Hi Guys
My fave unreleased songs are - Sanctuary, Eleanor's Castle, Mexico Gold and Louisiana Man which are on the Hollies Rarities album which I've had since about 1988.
Of these for songs, I think that Louisiana Man and Sanctuary would have made good singles.

For me my favourites are:
Samuel ( Love the added nylon string guitar on this and the vocals)
Man with no expression ( Just love the vocals and percussion work on this)
Tip of the Iceburg ( nice guitar work and drumming on this one)
Wings (Absoloutly beautiful song all round) |

I forgot about Wings... that's of course one of my favorites, too if that qualifies as unreleased. |

"Wings", while a trifle obscure, was released on a various artists LP in 1969 with The Beatles' original version of "Across the Universe", and many other artists. |

Great topic,
SchoolGirl: Great 60's feel, fast moving, just love it.
Maureen: Top song, I believe they wrote it for Bobby's wife, well that's what somebody once told me, don't know how true that is.
Now I have a bootleg (sorry Rob) of the lads singing Let It be live, now that would have been a great number for the Hollies to record.
Eleanors Castle: What a fun sound.
She Looked my way: Love the vocals
Best wishes,
Anthony |

Hi!
I can see this is an old subject, but as I'm new to this forum I still like to give my vote.
I'm sorry to say I haven't heard most of the songs that Sparty Scott listed, but recently I bought the Abbey Road CD with
Man with no expression
on it, and to me that song has got everything that made me fall for the Hollies, back in 1967. |
