I came across an interesting reference online to a Hollies performance for the BBC in 1971. They supposedly sung,

Hold On
Long Cool Woman
What A Life I've Led

As we all think Distant Light is a great album I'm sure we'd love to hear these recordings. Also, it is interesting to think that LCW was performed live in 1971 when it was still a mere throw away?

Several bands "smaller" than The Hollies have had BBC sessions CDs released so it is surprising that some Hollies tracks have never been released. Perhaps the band just aren't pushed.

I think that some of the most interesting stuff The Hollies recorded was around this era. Distant Light, Confessions of The Mind etc. but you never hear any of it live.

I wonder what the Singapore shows set list was? Did they record any then current album tracks?

'Hold On' appears on a bootleg CD entitled 'Hollies At The BBC' It is surprizing that an official CD has never been released containing the BBC sessions, but then again, the bootleg is such poor quality that it sounds as if it is made up from home tape recordings. So the original recordings might not exist.

Thanks Gordon. What else is on this bootleg?

I'm wondering what sort of ear/albums were covered at the BBC?

I've never seen any of The Hollies bootlegs doing the rounds on the net though I've read about several.

The quality of Witchy Woman is superb on the downloaded version which I have. Just goes to show that there are some gems out there. Wink

Hi Michael,
Any BBC transcription material recorded after Nash left the group in late 1968 was supplied by the group themselves to the BBC. In other words, the band stopped going in to the BBC studios to record exclusive versions for BBC radio and instead supplied the BBC with the music recorded for EMI/Polydor etc. Those three songs you mention are a case in point. All three are Abbey Rd recorded versions with LCW and Hold On basically identical. The 'Life I've Led' version is a different early mix and features a different organ solo or if its not a different solo then it's a mix which features it far more prominently up front, making it a Hollies rarity of sorts.
Cheers
Simon

I believe there is enough material for a volume 2 of the BBC album, why can't the group do like the Kinks, and release an official 2-CD BBC compilation. Nothing to be ashamed of. Roll over Beethoven is fantastic, I remember Wings from TOTP on Swedish radio, which was also great.
