On the bootleg-album In a spin, thereīs a liveversion of a song called Dear oak tree. The song was performed live in Germany 1969, and itīs a good song.

Is there anybody who know whoīs written it?

Hi,
From what I believe the song was done on their Austrailan TV special called don't get Sunburnt back in 1971 they also did Let It Be the Beatles number.

Thanks Anthony! Youīre right, except that I believe the recording was made 1969 (at least thatīs what the cover says). At the same show they also did Maybe Iīll settle down, which I belive is a Tom Paxton-song, long ago performed by Peter, Paul and Mary.

But who has written Dear Oak Tree??

I don't know who has written the song either. How is the sound quality of the song and the CD in general and where did you get it from because I'd love to have that CD.

The sound quality isnīt the best, but good enough. Sorry to say, but the sound on especially Dear Oak Tree is not good.

Itīs also odd hearing Hollies performing Let it be. Allanīs voice on that one is very strong and The Hollies version is powerful.

I found In a spin on the german ebay. Good luck in finding it, although I donīt really like bootlegs.

It was written by the band. Allan makes mention of it (on the audio I have, which included interviews with the band). Another tune on that Aussie TV special, "Blood Red Roses", I found listed on an LP by Matthews' Southern Comfort, the group that had a UK No. 1 with "Woodstock" (also covered by The Hollies on that show, ironically. The Hollies' version is great, better than CSN, &Y's).

A very intriguing record which as yet has eluded me. You can always get the things you don't really want...

Thanks for the answers! Interesting that the band wrote Dear Oak Tree themselves! I think itīs not a typcial Hollies-song.

Blood red roses was written by Ian Matthews. Ididnīt know that it was on the same Aussie show. And donīt forget that the boys also did A whiter shade on stage.... and Purple rain, Blackbird, Let it be, Reach out Iīll be there, etc., etc.

Has anyone heard the Matthews Southern Comfort original version of "Blood Red Roses"? I wonder if that album is worth getting?

For those keeping score, here are the composers of the three songs mentioned in this thread:

Dear Oak Tree - Allan Clarke

Maybe I'll Settle Down - Woody Guthrie (I Think)

Blood Red Roses - Ian Matthews

I think Clarke was just mucking round with some words while in on tour in Australia in early 1971 and made it up on the spot. The song was recorded impromptu on the 1971 Aussie tour 'Don't Get Sunburnt' 54 minute TV special and otherwise remains unheard/unrecorded.
Cheers
Simon
