Dedicated to James Towill. Who's little joke about When The Lights Go Out made me pay attention to it.

I think these two songs while "modern" really fit with The Hollies style. '60s esque ballads brilliantly produced with great harmonies. When The Lights Go Out and Can't Lie No More are IMO what the band should have been doing in the '80s. Another mystery as to why these were never released...

I shouldn't be speaking to you after what you said about Laughter Turns To Tears Shocked Wink Laughing

I really agree with you on the Mike Batt songs, both of them are absolutely superb. I also like Soldier's Song albeit a little too OTT for a single release. The live version of this as performed by Carl Wayne was first class.

If The Lights Go Out is a modern sounding number for the times without being awash with synthesisers. Great track. There really is a difference in the rhythm section with Calvert versus Steve Stroud (?) who played on the What Goes Around version. Stroud's playing is much more robust and a more thundering bass line compared with Bernie's (it hurts me to say that!).

That's right. This would have been a good direction for the Hollies to take in the '80s. "Can't Lie No More" has great guitar playing and is a really good song. They should have released it at the time.
