Hi All,

In recent months I've been trying to get every Nash-era track on CD & in the best available quality (I still dream of a 'complete' boxset covering this period!). Below is a full list of what I've found so far. Have I missed anything?

Also, the songs in bold I've only found in MONO - are true (not 'fake') stereo mixes of any of these available? Surely there's a stereo 'All The World Is Love' somewhere?!

Some early stereo mixes are notoriously 'binaural' (much of 'Evolution' for example), but many other tracks sound amazing. Fans who've only heard songs like 'Baby That's All' & 'After The Fox' in mono will be amazed!

Have a great Xmas everybody!!!

Peter Very Happy

A true stereo mix of "All The World Is Love" appeared on the "30th Anniversary Collection". Where did you find the live 1968 "Times They Are A Changin'" in stereo?

Thanks!

Someone sent me 'Times...' in stereo as a (high quality) mp3, but isn't this taken from the 80s 'Rarities' collection? Whatever, it's definately in true stereo.

I believe there's also an edited single version (released in Australia) of 'Try It' which features most of the effects missing, though I haven't heard it.

The stereo version of "Times..." live '68 that I sent Peter comes from the "Hollies Sing Dylan" CD as one of two bonus tracks. The other is the Nash version of "Blowin'..."

"All the world is love" did not appear on the 30th Anniversary Collection and the stereo version of it, therefore, is still at large. Don't get mixed up with "Whole world over" that was issued in stereo on this boxed set!

"Try it" on the Australian single is apparently the same as the version on a Mexican EP, and also a US Epic single. Anyone got this version?

You also have to consider the fact that there are mono mixes that are distinctly different from the stereo mixes, the reason for the mono/stereo CDs that were released, which duplicated the original LPs. Especially on the "Butterfly" album, the mixes were different on quite a number of tracks. So specifying "best quality" leaves out arguably better mono mixes in some cases. And then there are the remixes on the "30th Anniversary" set, which were controversial.

I agree that it can be argued that some mono mixes are superior, but I personally would rather hear a slightly inferior mix in stereo. One song that is noticeably different in mono is 'Too Many People', as it doesn't have the explosion at the end on the stereo mix.

Incidentally, why do you say the "30th Anniversary" remixes were controversial? Were these done without the band's consent? I'd love to hear more of the 'binaural' recordings (such as much of 'Evolution') given a remix!

Best Regards,

Peter

Version 1 = The Best of The Hollies (EMI, 1997)

Version 2 = The Hollies At Abbey Road, 1963-1966

It was said that Bobby Elliott disliked the stereo remixes of the classic singles. He thought that the sound of those tracks should be kept as they were originally.

I have a copy of the Mexican Try it version. If I do not remember wrong it's from an EP? I do not have the original, so maybe someone could clarify on this?

I can understand him thinking that, but I thought they simply enhanced the original performances by making certain instruments more prominent. Shame they missed out 'All The World Is Love' though! Wink

"Try it" was indeed on a Mexican EP.
