That song actually kicks butt. Yes, Allan has a kind of fake-blues delivery on Honey And Wine which has a certain appeal, but we've all heard that kind of singing from Clarke before.
Rather than the vocals, the star of the song for me is a driving, churning blues guitar played by our favorite eternal youth, Mr. Tony Hicks. I don't even mean the guitar solo so much as I do the way he filled the song with great bluesey licks throughout the verses & choruses.
Yes, this may have "just" been an album track, but for me it's a highlight, and easily better than several of the singles from that era.
If you haven't heard this track recently, please give it a try (at high volume, paying particular attention to Hicks' guitar), and then tell me what you think. |

It's on the Box set, it wasn't on an album as far as I know.
Yes it's a cool song with nice playing by Mr. Hicks. I also like the rhythm guitar with that effect on it, sounds very cool. |

Sorry about that. Honey And Wine wasn't an album track -- it was on the British EP "I'm Alive."
It's also on the CD "Not The Hits Again," which is where I first heard it (well, on the LP of that name in the pre-CD days).
Here's what the liner notes from "Not The Hits Again," written by a man called Rick Taylor, had to say about this track:
"HONEY AND WINE is another rarity - the Hollies' only EP track not taken from a contemporary album or single. It marks an excursion into British R&B, with Hammond organ, reverb guitar adn prominent tambourine. The song's bluesy narrative betrays Allan Clarke's lack of R&B pedigree but the arrangement cleverly mixes a little Brill Building spice into the Mississippi Delta rhythm."
The liner notes on the big box set say this about Honey & Wine: Recorded 7th April 1965 - Abbey Road. A Goffin & King song which first appeared on the the "I'm Alive" EP in 1965 and then remained unavailable until a 1986 collection called "Not The Hits Again."
I still maintain that this is a badly overlooked song, and should be sought out by Hollies fans. |
