I can't answer your direct question, but in a recent survey it was revealed that The Hollies had spent 472 weeks in the UK singles and albums charts.

I think that it is also much easier to get into the top ten than it was in the 60's and 70's - was there not a case recently of a single getting to No 1 in the Uk having only sold a 100,000 copies? Question

Take a look at this interesting article from the BBC a couple of years ago. Might explain a few things.

Counting the cost of a hit record

Hi Bernard,

last year I read in an encyclopedia about British music (I think it was called "British Hit Singles") that the Hollies have sold more than 4 million singles in the UK up to now. No information was given about album sales and about foreign business. But when you consider that the American market is a lot bigger one can imagine that at least "He Ainīt Heavy", "Long Cool Woman" and "The Air That I Breathe" have added to the singles sales.
As to their wealth it only remains to speculate. But the latest Sunday Times Rich list which went online yesterday doesnīt have a Hollie on it...Smile But then again you had to be worth at least 50 million pounds to get on it, and even Sir Michael Caine (last yearīs worth 42 mio pounds) didnīt make the top 1000 this year.
So if the new album will be a success, maybe there are chances for next year...Smile

Best Regards,

Michael

I don't know either but The Hollies were never an album band and that's what really matters... The highest charting ones were, I think, Stay and Dylan in England. Though I think Hollies 1974 made the Top 40 in America.

As to singles they must have sold a huge amount. I've seen some of them reference LCW as a million seller.

And we never really see proper charts in other countries besides the UK and US. I'd love to see what singles charted in Spain, Germany, Holland, France etc. I read an article recently from about 1970 saying what a clever machine The Hollies were, brilliantly planned PR, each single got a build up and the right single was released in the right country.

I'd like to know what was charting and where after 1974 when the run ended in Britain.

Micheal

Michael, the liner notes for the 2003 Greatest Hits double CD give all the hits in all the countries around the world.

I really hope they are successful IF they actually release the album. Problem is that the Hollies concerning records are always seen as a band that WERE, it will be quite difficult for the album buying market that they ARE. And what is selling quite decently are the Best of compilations. Donīt forget they made No.1 in NZ a couple of years ago. Even 2003īs Greatest Hits made the Top 30. With promotion there are chances. As I am from Germany, I can only suggest that they try to get in TV shows like "Wetten dass" - which still counts as Europeīs greatest Saturday evening show, appearences in such shows are the best promotion one can get.

Cheers, Michael
