The 8 tracks from this opus written by the Hollies - and some truly excellent choices; 'So Lonely', 'Hard Hard Year'..etc - does anyone know on which songs the Hollies provided the back up on?

I assume the backup would have been Tony, Bobby and Bernie? And possibly only on the 8 Hollie-written tracks?

Allan & Graham certainly were there - largely I think telling Phil & Don about the songs....and how to sing them etc

Allan has said he was 'over the moon' when Phil Everly (one of his biggest idols) ASKED HIM 'Hey Al how do I sing this part...?' - it really made Clarkey's Day !!!

years before then unknown teenagers Clarke & Nash had talked with The Everlys after a concert in their area - Don & Phil were really friendly and chatted to them for some time...so a few years on to be invited to their hotel & then the studio to advise The Everlys re recording THEIR songs was a quite magical moment for Allan & Graham...

I think instrumentally it was mostly Tony Hicks on electric guitar & very probably Allan & Graham strumming acoustics, plus doing percussion etc,

- Bobby Elliott has said he actually only played drums on just the one track as he'd been away on holiday and only came back in time to contribute to the one song (not sure which it is tho)

Future Led Zeppelin guys Jimmy Page (guitar) & John Paul Jones (bass - who played bass on The Hollies 'Don't Run and Hide' that year too) featured quite a bit too so I've been told

Tony has joked how the great Jimmy Page (of The Yardbirds/Led Zep/ and 'ace' session guitarist who also played harmonica on Cliff Richard & The Shadows hit 'Time Drags By' that year too !) asked Tony how to get a particular guitar part right as per The Hollies version - 'don't worry, just leave it to me Jim...' Tony quipped !

Ex- John Barry Seven drummer & sessionman Dougie Wright (who did some drumming for The Hollies on 'Evolution' the following year when Bobby was ill) was on drums for most of it I believe

I doubt if Bernie Calvert was present - at that point in 1966 Eric Haydock had left the band & Bernie had only initially come in to play on the 'Bus Stop' recording in May...then went back up North to resume his factory job !

Eric Haydock even stood in as bassist for a 'Top of The Pops' appearance circa June 1966 to promote 'Bus Stop' (that was up on youtube a while back having been rediscovered - with Clarkey also playing acoustic guitar !)

As I said The legendary JPJ played bass on 'Don't Run and Hide' ('B' side of 'Bus Stop') and another legendary figure - Klaus Voormann - Beatles German friend, 'Revolver', 'Anthology' & 'Bee Gees First' album covers artist & bassist of Paddy, Gibson & Klaus/Manfred Mann ('chapter two') /Plastic Ono Band & everyone who was 'anyone' of note in the seventies (John Lennon, George Harrison, Carly Simon, etc) had stood in as bass player with The Hollies for a few radio sessions, a London Palladium show appearance & rehearsals...Klaus almost became a 'Hollie' but was then lured away by a better offer from Manfred Mann...

so it's most probable Bernie was not actually on 'Two Yanks in England' - he got a phone call from (then) Hollies manager Mike Cohen telling him they wanted him in (after Klaus joined Manfred Mann)....and Bernie accepted being told he was on the payroll and to report to them in September for a European tour (per Bernie)

Mike Gregory of The Escorts - a bassist/vocalist - almost got The Hollies job - but Bernie was also a keyboardist of some skill (hence 'Pay You Back With Interest') and was an old friend of Tony & Bobby being a bandmate from 'Dolphin Days' in 'The Dolphins' which clinched it for him...

Mike Gregory later was in The Swinging Blue Jeans too - in both Escorts & Blue Jeans with Terry Sylvester !

hope this helps
