I'm watching The Saint on BBC America, and the British memories are all coming back, especially when 1966 circa cars appear in the background (does my 1972 MGB chrome bumper roadster carcass, behind my uncle's Indiana barn, count?). Think about it folks, The Hollies, Spencer Davis Group, Yardbirds, Kinks, Beatles, Animals, etc., etc., were cranking out great/energized/positive hits; 1966 was the best! What do you think about that? |

Hi David!
1966 was a great year for rock music but I think it's impossible to chose the best year because there are too many great ones.
One of my personal favourite years is 1969 because in that year so many great albums were released:
Beatles - Abbey Road (My favourite Beatles album - Revolver (1966) comes close)
Hollies - Sing Dylan/Hollies
The Who - Tommy (Another great one!)
Bob Dylan - Nashville Skyline (I like that one very much, his singing is great)
Kinks - Arthur (In my opinion the best Kinks album!)
Rolling Stones - Let It Bleed
Elvis Presley - From Elvis In Memphis (his best LP)
Jethro Tull - Stand Up (perfect album)
Led Zeppelin - 2 (Great Hard Rock album)
Blind Faith - Same
Rod Steward - The Rod Steward Album
Humble Pie - As Safe As Yesterday Is (Not that strong melodies but it rocks!)
- Town And Country (Stronger Melodies but less rocking energy)
CCR - Bayou Country
Green River
Willy And The Poorboys
Jeff Beck - Beck-Ola (With Rod Steward on vocals)
Crosby Stills And Nash - Same
I could go on but I think that's enough.
I think the best years for rock music were between 1965 and 1975 |

My favourite music is the British Invasion period - 1963 to 1966. |

1966 was a great year for many Rock/Pop Stars but my favourite music ranges from the early 60's to the late 70's

The best bands of the late '70s were in my opinion, apart from the Hollies, Smokie, Sweet and Queen. But a lot of other musicians and bands were getting worse and worse in the late '70s. |

I have to agree with David. 1966 was a very good year, especially for the Hollies. I remember seeing them on Top Of The Pops each time when their three great singles were released in that year: I Can't Let Go, Bus Stop and Stop Stop Stop. Great memories. And the icing on the cake was at the end of 1966 when the NME awards were announced and the Hollies pipped the Stones for second place in the Best Group category, with only the Beatles keeping them off the top. |

Hi Distantlight
I think the best bands from the late 70's were The Hollies, Sherbet, Smokie, Abba and Racey.
And James, it is great that The Hollies were voted No.2 in the best band category of the 1966 NME awards If the Beatles were'nt so popular our boys would have been No.1, but No.2 is good though.
All The Best

David,
I'll go with 1966 for the greatest year in rock and roll, as it is the year in which I both became really acquainted with the Hollies (I Can't Let Go) and then a BIG fan (Stop! Stop! Stop!). It was also a pivotal entertainment year for another reason, as the first season of Star Trek started that fall.
My interest in Trek has diminished over the years with the decreasing quality and poor scheduling of the various series. But my appreciation of the Hollies has only increased with the opportunities I've had to see them in the past 2 years. My love for this great band has not "wayned" at all!
Kathy, it only makes sense that your favorite era is 1963-66. Was it not simply the best period ever for the creation of so many great dance styles? |

Wow, some great responses! Distant Light, I love 1969, too!; I started my second band then (Chicago Transit Authority style), and Led Zepplin (an evolution of The Yardbirds/New Yardbirds, with Jimmy Page!), Blind Faith (alas, only one album, with my man, Stevie Winwood!) were two of my favorite groups, amongst your excellent list! BUT, 1966 was pure and original for me; plus how about the 1966 NME Awards info from John Truman, that's hard to beat! Susie, yes, The Hollies could easily have been #1, if it weren't for those Beatles (who I also worshipped; "I'm not worthy!"). Brandy, I love your choices, too! By the way, I recently worked with William Shatner, and Leonard Nimoy on a Priceline commercial, great/fun professionals! How about that Star Trek!?!; beam me up Hollies! P.S. KathyGoGo, the British Invasion forever!!!!!!!!!!! |
